| Ok, so I have 2 mares I'm hauling (7yo & 4yo) who seem like their in heat every other week. The 4yo ran @ Ft Smith and after each run when I was unsaddling her, she spread out, lifted her tail and acted like she needed to pee. She did not want to get in the ground and turn during her runs which is unlike her. She was in heat the week prior to leaving so I thought I was good. :( I don't want to put them on Regumate so wanted to see what other opions were out there? The 7yo gets back sore also. Both are sewn up. I've heard that I could give Ocytocin for 7days in a row and that would keep them from coming in for a few/several months???? Wondering if anyone has tried this? It's much cheaper than Regumate/Altrenigist but want to make sure it works and is safe for them if they possibily will be bred down the road? Any info would be greatly appreciated! I know they're not comfortable during their cycle but it's been a pain when I have them entered and they're sore from being in heat. Thanks In Advance!! |

| I always start with a reproductive exam to rule out any issues. A mare that is cycling every other week likely has an issue because that is not normal. I know people don't want to deal with Regumate, but it is the only thing that has worked consistently for me. I put it in their grain, but you can also get a dosing gun that sounds like it is pretty handy and easy to use. |

Location: Texas | I would get them looked at as well. They should be out of heat for 2 weeks then heat for 1 week. I would also mark on a calendar when you notice heat and for which mare so you can actually track how often and how long they are in heat for. I haven't heard the oxytocin shot deal that you were talking about..where did you hear that? |

Location: Lost in the corn of Iowa. | I haul 2 mares and I have the same issue just more severe. My 17 yr old mare has started ducking barrels because she is so worried about my younger mare back at the trailer. Had the vet check her, no lameness, teeth are good, reproductively she is fine. She is just hormonal. I too have held out for a long time, but I have reached my breaking point and next week the vet is coming down again and he's bringing a couple bottles of Regumate. I'm over the mare hormones. Love my mares, but the hormones...not so much |

| I didn't want regumate either but my mare was in heat 24/7 bumping and grinding on whatever she could find. THat 10cc squirt in her mouth every evening has been a LIFE SAVER. None of the herbals, or mare blends, or crud would even touch her heats. Regumate and never looked back. I know she is much happier to!!! Different animal. |

My mare has been on it for about two weeks. She is currently at a trainer and she noted that she is so much better now. She was tied inbetween two geldings yesterday and was just "one of the guys". That would have been impossible prior to Regumate. |

I agree!!!! Mine would be fine but her cycles were so nasty she would just bump the trailer, squeel, etc. She always did whatever you asked her but she sees me coming with her regumate and she will practically come over the fence to get it. I think she got it figured out it keeps her cramps away. And for the cost of all these herbal supplements for mares, might as well go with regumate same price. |

| This month's BHN has an article on mare cycles and oxytocin was one of things mentioned to use. It's cheap and my vet said 3-5cc's for 7 days would keep them from
coming in for a few months. I haven't tried it yet but wanted to see if anyone else has? |
