When you geld a stud in his late teens, can you turn him out with mares or will he retain that behaviour since hes live covered mares most of his life?

At this late in the game, I would expect him to maintain some level of his behavior. You won't know until you castrate him and give him a few months away from mares... but I would not expect all of the behavior to disappear.

I had bought a gelding as a 6 year old that was bred before he was gelded at 6. He mounted my 2 year old filly when he was 7. He was docile every other time except then.

I have a gelding that was gelded at 8 yo after living with and live covering mares. Never has he ever acted like a stud. You would never know other than he still looks like one.

Very curious the reasoning for gelding a late teen stud?
Are you looking for him to calm down or are you needing him turned out and do not have seperate pastures that are safe?
Just curious, not here to argue. Just never have understood why people geld after the horse has lived a life of being a stud.

If the owner isn't interested in breeding the stallion, they may want to just give him a better life not separated from the other horses and don't want to see him fall into bad hands. At lot of people have a hard time housing a stallion. Even a very kind one.

I gelded mine at 12 years old, he had bred previously and I gelded because he was behaving terribly and I was not interested in having it. From the day I brought him home from the vet on he never acted like a stud again. After the initial time period I turned him in with my mare and he was a gentlemen. Best decision I ever made.

Good to know there are still responsible horse owners in this world. Thanks OregonBR

You're welcome.

To the OP. I've gelded a 6 year old that had bred 2 seasons. About 12 mares. The only thing different my vet did from a normal gelding of a young horse who hasn't matured is the major blood source to the testicles needs to be tied off so they don't have the danger of bleeding too much if they open it up. Plus the surgery is a more major than gelding younger. My 6 year old was in misery until I gave him a shot of banamine. Then he got over it very quickly and went on to be a nice gelding on barrels.

Duncan is still a stud and has been pasture breeding mares the last 3 years. If we can't find a boarding stable we feel comfortable leaving him a stud at, hubby and I have made the decision he will be gelded. We will freeze semen on him first though.

How old is he? I know you've talked about him in the past, but I couldn't remember that. . .

He's 9 this year. I think I found a place to keep him a mile from where we live that is self care, but I like it that way... There would be a gelding there and 2 mares - including mine. I can put up a hot wire buffer zone and I think it will work.

I gelded a 11 yr old and a 10 year old stud.  I did it because I needed to stop the accumulation of horses and it was a pain in the arse to keep everything separated.  I ended up selling one of them but the other is still here on my place, he's 19 now and running with mares and geldings.  He was a well behaved stallion and still that way.

I gelded mine at 8. He was really laid back as a stud, even more as a gelding. No problems at all. Since I was not breeding anymore, there was no reason to leave him intact.

I certainly hope it works out for you, and again, I am so happy for you getting him back!
