My pasture had a bunch of weeds, but also a lot of good grass underneath. My neighbor just shredded it for me. Do I need to keep the horses off a couple of days, or can I turn them back out now? Pasture was mowed this afternoon.

Our pasture usually gets mowed with the horses still in it. Never had a problem

Same.  They'll typically go for the newly uncovered grass before anything else.

Dumb question here but why does no one worry about this but grad clippings are catastrophic?
I agree they will be fine but just curious why we think different then eating clippings?

Very simple ... yard grass clippings are chewed up and blown
into a bag that starts to ferment instantly. You dump the
bag of mashed up "hot" grass in a pile and it heats up even
more and starts to grow mold within a few hours.

To make matters worse yard grass clippings are usually thrown
into a dry lot or poor over grazed pasture and your colic problems
start to happen big time!!

With a brushhog or shredder the grass/weeds are taller with
less smashing and chewed up debris and it is usually lying on
taller stubble with air passing thru the windrows ... no fermenting
to create mold etc etc ..

As stated previously ... horses will find the new uncovered green
grass to eat vs the dead stuff that is not the same as curing hay
to bale...

We never have had a problem with this. But if the weeds are a problem you need to spray the pasture to kill the weeds. We have had good results with Grazon which kills the broadleaf weeds. We had a bunch in our pastures and after spraying our pastures have rebound looking great. We did bush hog after the spraying and are now allowing the grass to go to seed before we cut again. But this year our pastures are really really looking great. BUt I should also mention we drill seeded early this spring and the rains have helped too.

Glad you explained that as that is why I asked the question to begin with. I have always known not to feed yard clippings, so wanted to make sure. Your explanation makes perfect sense!
