Elite Veteran Posts: 612	We have a 13 year old mare that always has a large hay belly. She looks like she could have a foal at anytime. She is well taken care of. We have only owned her since last Fall and she has always looked like this. We have wormed her. She is fed a small amount of Omolene 200 twice a day along with alfalfa when she isn't turned out in the pasture with decent grass. She is only out on pasture for about 6 hours a day. She is my son's roping horse, so she gets plenty of exercise. Her hair coat and hip muscles look good. What can we do to get her to lose the belly? Edited by JAG18 2017-07-03 12:54 PM

I just read the headlines Posts: 4483	Forco has helped my gelding with his hay belly. It hasn't disappeared completely but it tightened up his back cinch 2 holes

Elite Veteran Posts: 889	My parents recently bought a mare with a hay belly...so much so they even had her preg checked! It was negative. They put her on straight cleaned oats and grass/alfalfa mix and she ran in a dry lot. Slowly but surely it came off and she looks fantastic.

Married to a Louie Lover Posts: 3303	My heel horse is built like a 6x6 post - let's just say he winters well and gains weight through osmosis if we stall him closest to the feed room. We put the whole barn on Platinum after having amazing results with our hard keeper. The heel horse has lost quite a bit of the belly and really looks fabulous, better than we've seen him look in a long time, even when he was going down the rodeo road hard. I've also heard great things about Forco, if my chiro hadn't turned us on to Platinum it was on my short list. I'd try one of those for 30 days and take pictures so you can really see the difference.

A grass belly could also be what I call an "air" belly caused by resistant worms. Simple treatment to find out ... Give an entire tube of Quest and 30 days later a tube of Ivermectin and see what she looks like during the next 30 days. If belly width and looks smaller ... worm with Ivermectin every 60 days. If this mare has had several babies ... she will remain looking the way she is right now. I don't know any vets that specialize in tummy tucks ... lol

My mare's belly is the same way. Not extremely wide but bigger than most. She lost her athletic build years ago in the stomach dept. It's just a Momma thing.
