This coming Wednesday is the second race in the barrel racing series I started. Well, it is supposed to be 101 degrees that day, with a humidity of appx. 21%, making the heat index about 97. I hate to cancel it because it is only the second race in my series, but gosh it is supposed to be hot! Just asking for opinions of those who have put on races before. Thanks!

Arizona runs them at night in the summer ... it can be over a 100 degrees. We don't have the humidity though ... most are run in a covered pen too. Sorry .. no help here.

In Florida that doesn't even enter the equation, neither does rain. Lightening or a flooded arena are the only deal breakers.

You could ask for everyone's opinion, but most wouldn't even factor in the heat in their decision to go or not. Pickups have A/Cs and horses are used to the heat.

If we canceled races in Texas because of the heat- we would never get to go!!! The heat index has been over 100 here for the last few weeks. We do have a good many night races though.

It gets up to maybe 105 around here but our humididity is probably never less than 50%. The humidity here is the killer. I don't think we have ever canceled a barrel race because of heat. Just make sure that there is plenty of water available for rinsing of horses and for them to drink

We have little to no humidity here in the summer unless it rains, and the race will be run in the evening. When it comes to heat up here in Montana, we're a bunch of sissies, but we can take the cold (although we'll complain about it the whole time, lol)! So, I'll keep the race date. To us anything much over 90 is hot!

You could always postpone it until later on in the day?

If you have lights maybe move into the evening. I get that it's hot in an area not use to it, but people can make their own decision to come or not. Just make sure there is water available.

Having a heat index LOWER than the actual temp seems so very strange to this Midwest gal...

Its 110 here today. We've moved all races to 7 pm or later. Never have cancelled one.

If there isn't lightning in the area don't cancel. If people don't feel like it's safe for them they won't come.

Good enough! As far as heat index goes, we have REALLY low humidity here, so yes our heat index is lower than the actual temp! The race is slated to start at 7PM, so I think we'll be okay, just me and my arena help will have to put up with the heat prepping the arena.

Just had a barrel race start earlier to beat the heat. Instead of a 10am start, we started at 8am. It worked well.
