How long are your Hock injections lasting on average. My mare uses her hind end REALLY hard and we have just done lowers with steroid/antibiotic only. About how long has this combination been lasting for you all? Thanks!

It totally depends on the horse. The horse I ride about every 4-4.5 months. My 5 year old at the trainer's 6 months or more. I usually go by the calendar. I have the vet check him and he says yep. My trainer goes by how the horse feels.

Yep, same here.. My good mare just uses and abuses herself when she runs... just gives 10000000000000% effort and she gives me very very little indication she needs them redone so I have to really listen... Thanks! Its been 5 months. I think she is due.

I think it depends on the individual, and if there are any issues within the joint. I had a mare with a hock spur that only went 6 months max on Hyvisc/antibiotic (SP?). Then I had a gelding with another spur in the same spot that I used trimisclone (spelling, I'm sorry!). And he lasted 3 months. I try to always do an HA product and antibiotic verses something like cortisone, etc. Maybe I am way off though, I don't know.

Nope, every horse is different and I really rely on my vet to make the best decisions about what to put into the joint... LOL Each one is so different. I just didnt know if my mare at 5 was early, average, etc for needing done. Thanks!

There was a paper published not too long ago that compared HA alone, HA + steroid, and steroid alone in joint injections. The paper said steroid alone gave the best results and lasted longer than the HA alone or HA + Steroid. I'm curious to see if other researchers repeat that to see if they get the same results or not. There's always some level of bias in these things.

Some horses need to be injected every couple months, others can get away with once yearly.. But honestly, the drug only lasts for a finite period of time and I can tell you there's no drug left working in the hock a year out.

Just do what is best for your and your horse and their age/level or arthritis in the joint. We use different drug/HA combinations based on those factors.

My best mare was getting her left hock done every 2 months and her right hock every 6. There was also suspicion her suspensory was bothering her... because sometimes you can get temporary relief with TMT injections. She ended up getting surgery on her hind suspensories and that helped with the frequency of her hock injections.

My daughters gelding can go 8 to 9 months.  He has no issues other than there is not much joint fluid and what is there is the consistency of water.  When his turns begin to lose their roundness and become more V shaped it is time.  If he goes a couple runs past that time, he will begin to get trashy in the alley/gate.
