Location: Dubuque,IA | There has been lots of great info on here about these engines in the past. I have a unique issue. It was discovered this week that the trusted shop I had been taking my truck to for the past year and half at some point did not put on the air filter!!! I think for over a year and now my engine is ruined. I have some questions about a new engine and would appreciate it if I could ask some questions of a mechanic familiar with these engines.Would someome please PM me!!!?? |

The air filter is an a housing that is impossible for me to access. I have to have the filter replaced at the dealership (because my hubby refuses to work on my Ford). It is COMPLETELY concealed in the impossible to access housing. Mine could be missing and I would not know it. |

The "housing" is fairly simple to pop off, I own a 6.0 and do all the work on my own truck.....so yes, if someone were actually checking fluids or checking to see how dirty the air filter were, they would notice it's gone lol
ETA: if this was the shops fault, then I would definitely be after the shop about paying to replace the engine or rebuild it

Depends on the year of manufacture. The 2004 was easy to see and replace. The 2006 has a huge air filter an all but impossible to access. I have owned many Ford diesels and believe you me, I would like to shoot the engineers who never actually have to work on these things.
For the first few years I had this truck the air filter was available only through the dealership and cost around $150...talk about sticker shock when you are expecting maybe $12-20. After market I think they are still about $80.
Trying to remember if it was the '04 or a previous truck where they put the air intake in the wheel well and the dust generated would plug the air filter and had to have an update done to move the intake and air filter housing.....

Location: Dubuque,IA | I have two oil changes in this truck ,injectors replaced, all since head gaskets were replaced in Nov. of 2015. all at the same highly respected diesel shop. Also have given them $8000 for all of this work. I don't expect to be checking my air filter. THEY GOOFED big time and beleive me theywill be paying. Cost to replace my engine is $17212 and I don;t plan on paying for it from their negligence. Fortunately I have a legal plan and won't cost me for the attorney. And Yes I will be finding a new diesel shop!! |

| HOLY COW! $17000 for a new engine? You could practically get you a used one of those trucks for that. THAT seems crazy. |

Location: North Central Iowa Land of white frozen grass | I own a 06 6.0 and if they forgot to put the filter in the houseing you would never know it was not there. Repair shops carry insurance for this so it will not cost them the whole cost to fix yours. But it should be their bill. These have a very long lasting air filter so I think most of them are 50,000 mile filter. There would be no reason for the owner to inspect it in that time frame. |

Location: Southeast Louisiana | Can you have a 7.3 engine put in that truck? ...since you now need a new engine. Just curious. |
