Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | If you'ur choosing between these 2 thickness I would go with the 3/4, the 1 inch is really thick and if you have a good fitting saddle the 3/4 or a 1/2 inch would be a good choice. The 1 inch would make a saddle really tight if its fits good. I have the 1/2, 3/4 and 7/8 but no 1 inch..

| I think I own just about all of them.
We rope in 1 1/8" and 1" pads, they are quite thick and I wouldn't choose them for a barrel saddle daily.
I have a 1/2" and 7/8" and one before they started putting tags on them that is either 3/4 or 7/8. It just depends on what horse and saddle I'm using which pad I choose. Typically the 7/8's are the ones I go for, although if my little horse bulks up again we may be down to the 1/2". I bought the 1/2" for a horse I sold who's saddle would have fit like a glove without any pad.
The 5 Stars don't compress down like other pads, meaning they are the thickness they say they are and provide better protection over a pad that does compress. |

Location: Oklahoma | If your saddle fits correctly you want the thinnest pad. I have one too from before they started putting tags on the pads. It's a 1/2" but measures closer to a 3/4". I'm looking at another pad and wanting to get a 3/4" |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | On a side note, the thickness of the pad has nothing to do with the amount of shock absorbtion in these particular pads. Wool is naturally shock absorbant and moisure wicking. (Some people are alarmed at dry spots under 5 Star pads...) I run into a lot of ropers who are convinced if they go down in pad thickness in order to fit a saddle correctly, they go down in shock absorbtion as well. That just isn't the case...
As for your question: If your saddle is a bit snug, go for the 3/4". If it is a bit wide, go for the 1". And if it fits like a glove without a pad consider the 1/2". |
