What are Isoxsuprine and Previcox usually used for? What's the difference between the two? I have some older horses who have various issues -- sore feet, arthritis, sidebone, one who is not lame but once in a while moves like something is bothering her.... not sure if it's heat cycle, bugs, ulcers.... None of them are lame, but none of them are right. The vet is coming out soon. I want to understand these medications because I'm sure she's going to prescribe one or both for one or more horses. Thanks.

Previcox is anti inflamitory - and they will prescribe equiox (not sure of spelling) - since most vets will not do the off label on previcox any more. Easier on stomach then bute so most people use for longer term but takes longer to get into system. I think it still can cause kidney damage long term, but a good drug for a sore horse with arthritus or sore feet.  Isoxsupirine I believe increases blood flow to small vessels - so I have had vets prescribe for  inflamation. PS.. sorry about all the lousy spelling above but I am on my first cup of coffee and typing on a phone :)

I used Previcox for a few months on my barrel horse. Never more than the 1/4 tab. He is recovering from kidney failure. We almost lost him and it was a very expensive lesson. It was supposed to be safer for loner use. Nope!

As someone stated, Previcoxx used for inflammation and pain management, Isoxoprine for blood flow. Careful of long term use of Previcoxx. Have a horse with kidney stones due to it.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the info!

Sorry about you guys whose horses had kidney problems from the Previcox. Something important I will keep in mind.

Only a blood test would tell you. My horse had NO symptoms and had made a 1D run when he went into failure. Also, the blood test isn't  a great indicator because by the time it shows a problem, you REALLY have a problem. Kidneys keep on working til suddenly they don't and unfortunately the body cannot heal the kidneys like it can the liver.

Swd, I will try to stay away from the Previcox if that is recommended.

We use Isoxsuprine Hydrochloride Tablets for our navicular gelding. It is to increase blood flow.

If its more short term recommendation then it's probably be safe to use. But anything over 30 days I would definitely question the vet and be worried.
