What are some good ones? My niece is 10 and she's asked for barrel racing and breakaway roping dvds for Christmas. We've got the breakaway ones covered and hubby's family are all ropers.

I'm more of a book person so I don't even know who's put out dvds aside from Fallon (won't be getting her that one). She's very astute and has been studying YouTube videos of Sherry, Lisa, etc that I told her to.

Any suggestions?

I really like Dena Kirkpatricks series.  I wonder if you can still get some of the old Winning Runs releases, they had some good ones.  I feel like with all the youtube videos, not many are making it to dvd anymore.

Another idea.....you could get her a 1 year or 6 month or however many months you want - subscription to giddyupflix.com

There are over a 1000 DVD's available and not just on barrel racing -- go look at their website and see what you think. You have a queque to keep your "wants" and can change the order of what gets sent next.  Only thing I don't like about it is that they are in WA and I am in TX, so shipping takes a while, but it is possible for me to rent through 3 DVD's a month - I take notes and might even re-rent one I want to see again.

www.trainingbarrelhorses.com is great....and free! Great variety of trainers.

I thought about suggesting that too, but at 10 years old she's got a time limit on her phone/computer usage. She'll watch dvds fine, but tends to get sidetracked on the internet.

I hope she can remember this weekend what I told her tonight because she put together some really nice runs! She's riding my husband's great rope horse who is just too athletic and broke for his own good. I override him and we don't mesh on the barrels, but man he and Liv just click. They are super cool. Low 23's on the poles too and the only "training" he's had is what she's done. Hopefully she'll grow another 6" or so before next year, she'll be deadly when she can actually wrap her leg around him.

Yes agree! Back when I was 10 yrs old, all that information would have been overwhelming!! Just wanted to have fun and ride. Ty Mitchell from the Josey Ranch has some good to the point videos on You Tube, which might work for her.

I would think the same but that's what she's got on her Christmas list! She's a very driven little gal.

She also ran a 22.11 on poles today... I don't think I've ever run a 22...

For her age, Martha Josey's 'How To Run Like a Champion and Get the Money'. Hands down. That helped me so much when I was that age. The Dena series is amazing but for a 10 year old, I would definitely be looking at 'How To Run Like a Champion'.

ETA: Can I ask why not Fallon's? I rode with her for a year when I was 14 and she helped me tremendously. Granted that was over 10 years ago, but I imagine her repertoire has only grown in that time. So for an experienced adult, maybe her style isn't your cup of tea. But to the youth, she seems to be able to really connect with them and help them to understand.

Martha Joseys Dvd's are PERFECT for a 10 yr old!! They are masters at keeping it simple and explaining different things where anyone can understand very easily.  She will get a lot of info from them. Once shes older Id say the other dvds mentioned and some others.

If you can find them some of the old Winning Runs DVD's are great.  I really like Tammy Fisher's.  That is one of my favorites.  But there used to be a ton of them.

One I'm not a fan of her style and two I've heard the latest DVD isn't very well done. Since I'm the one teaching my niece I want to make sure whichever DVDs we get for her meshes well with the way I'm teaching her.

When she's got a solid foundation and understanding of the basics and starts to develop her own style, then she can decide who she wants to follow.

I'll check out the Josey's! The masters for sure.
