So about a month or so ago (maybe 2) one of my mares lost half her tail. From the end of the tail down is just gone. I found it a day or so later out on pasture, nothing odd besides alittle mat from lack of TLC. So now shes just got the top half to swish, but wasn't too concerned?! Her tail doesn't seem thin, just like it was snipped off or she caught it on something.
So this morning I opened the windows (like I do every morning) and see all 4 horses out standing outside our quonset. Had half a tub of cracked corn in there they were munching on, so was getting alittle upset with hub bc he's sure he left the gate open after mowing last night.....anyway he assured me there was no more than a 5 gal bucket left in it, nothing else in shed to worry about besides some alfalfa they for some reason weren't interested in. I notice my mare was laying down when I spotted them though, which isn't completely odd, she lays down quite often out in pasture, not anything I have been concerned about as its not an up and down deal like shes uncomfortable, its just seems to be a lazy lay down, but thought it was odd she was laying down this morning out in front of shed. When I walked down she hopped right up and I watch her, she kinda stretched....just nor sure if I should be more concerned, she seem slow moving but shes always been a some what lazy horse. My husband can see me watching her and says he thinks she been acting like that (laying down more than usual) since he mowed the pasture their in a week ago?! So I guess I'm posting here to see if I should be more concerned? They are due to be wormed, so will try this. Ive heard horses can loose their tails bc of worms. Im watching for founder to be safe but really don't thing any of them consumed enough. Maybe I should have her vet check to be safe.

Sorry left for awhile, just getting back.
Mare seems to be completely normal both this week and last.....so guess I didn't need to be too concerned. Still don't know why we have half a tail, but hoping it decides to grow back.

No, it was corn we grew ourselves, just had elevator run it through and crack/roll.
