Expert Posts: 5293	Couple months ago I posted about my 3 year old who essentially got spasmodic colic of his SHOULDER. Lol acted little colicky and he just had tremors of Right shoulder. Subsided in half hour or so. This morning I fed and he was just fine. Hour later he is bucking and kicking acts like he has a bee chasing him. Stops and paws etc. I thought he got stung. Go out and catch him. He had the same deal going on again, same side , but this time it was in the smack dab middle of his rib cage. Lol the muscles on the outside of his ribs twitching like crazy. Called vet and she says probably has a gas bubble or might be an ulcer that morning feed irritated. I gave banamine as per her instructions and he was fine ever since. Even when twitching he was passing manure and drinking water. Just the darndest thing. He ran last night awesome. I let him eat some green grass at the arena. Maybe that upset something. Who knows. Any ideas?

The first couple of times I think it ended up being gut related as we were having issues with hay but didn't know it at the time. I also have a mare who would do this until I got her electrolytes lined out and adding Magnesium seems to have helped.

Ima Cool Kid Posts: 3496 Location: TN	time to join the PSSM group on FB they have a lot of info . videos of what your talking about muscle spasms. its not fun when you think your horse has the curse but they have figured out some management diets for PSSM type #1. there are 5 types and lots of blood lines who are positive for the different "types" they name bloodlines and positive carriers. thinking this will change what we think about some "popular" lines

Whack and Roll Posts: 6342 Location: NE Texas	HYPP can cause these types of muscle contractions/spasms as well. Might look into testing for that. Could be dehydration creating muscle spasms. My husband has been taking the Keto-OS and has found that if he doesn't really pay attention to keeping his body hydrated and eating right, he is waking up with terrible charlie horses in his sleep. Some things pull moisture from the body and soft tissues and we don't realize it's happening. Hope it's nothing serious! That's scary to watch i'm sure and obviously painful for you colt. Thanks everyone! I am familiar with the PSSM diet... He is on Curost total support AND extra scoop of curost stomach. I am reworking his diet to be more PSSM friendly just in case. In the mean time I am going to treat for ulcers. Since he is 3 and competing VERY WELL and gives 1000 percent every time I think he might be one of those internal worry warts. lol
