Are there any good alternatives to regumate that can be administered? Right now not looking at marble. Mare is not moody but seems to be in heat more frequently then usual and doesn't want to run or get down in turns when she is in. Vet is coming tomorrow to look at another horse so I wanted to be able to ask him about different treatment options.

Altrenogest injectable from Betpharm... if you go this route buy the 7 dose injectable (every 12 days) it is much cheaper then the once a month dose and I'm shocked to find out how many people don't know about that and waste a bunch of money.

I'm glad youre not looking at the marble... please never use them. They can break and when they do they can shred their uterus and scar it down so much they are infertile.

Nothing against regumate. I just knew it had been on the market a long time and didn't know if there were generics or substitutes at this point.

We are currently using this on my daughters pony mare. It is a LIFESAVER! I also like not having to use regumate because you have to do it every day where this is every 12 days

Medroxyprogesterone. Had a mare that just showed signs of being uncomfortable. Gave her a shot in the spring and then month's later, whenever she showed signs of needing it. Some people give it monthly, I just never saw the mare need it that frequently.

It is a life saver for me too...one time I had a slip up and was cutting a reorder close to when she was due. I described the situation to the pharmacist as a 'ticking time bomb' in my pasture and I wasn't kidding!

I asked my vet about the 12 day injectible and she said to stick with regumate as the injectable form frequently makes performance horses sore. Pasture pets OK, performance they get pretty sore.

I agree. I can't speak about the specific ones mentioned in this post, but have used injectible as in the past on a broodmare as an alternative to Regumate. She has permanent large bumps on her, and I can imagine that they were painful.

I have tried another injectible for a mare that was having cycling issues and causing discomfort. I could not get consistent results.

Based on my experiences with injectibles I will stick with regumate or the generic.

Mine is not a pasture pet and it does not make her sore. It only affects her performance in a positive way! It does recommend on the bottle to give it in 2 spots and it is just a 1.5 mL dose so people might not follow that recommendation and then have issues.
