Location: Arkansas | But I can't. . . . Chandler has a sick pond, and it is the most disheartening thing; they are dying and there's not a single thing we can do. He's got 4 electric and 2 PTO paddlewheels running 24/7. My "momma mode" wants to fix it and make it all better, no matter what. This is just part of fish farming tho, and no one can do anything. Makes me want to puke when I drive around it, and I don't mean just from the smell. The constant current keeps the fish moving and doesn't allow them to sink, which in a normal situation they would. So we are seeing the same dead fish constantly---I'm hoping this is making it look worse than it really is. Estimates on loss have been 5-12 thousand pounds. Lord knows this isn't what he needed. (Seems to be snakebit lately---Thursday night had 3 paddlewheels go down within hours of each other.) He needs some good things to start happening
Any good thoughts y'all can spare, we sure would appreciate.

A fish farmer's nightmare. . .
Certain diseases/problems there are things we can do to help or fix, but these fish have "no blood" disease, and there is no medication or answer for it. (The farmer's term for it--I can't remember what the actual medical term is. I just kept saying they were anemic. . . And he was feeding feed with iron--go figure.)
Not that it's helpful, but there are several farmers around us with it; next door neighbor had 12 ponds with it, so we are very thankful that it's just 1 pond we are dealing with.
And Sean just told me that a tractor quit in the sick pond and they can't get it running. . . . . Lord have mercy
Appreciate you Miss R for the pictures. And for all of y'all sending up prayers. |

You feed these fish right? Could it be the food thats being fed to them? Will maybe not since this is the only pond thats sick, just thinking to myself.

Yes mam, they get fed every day of feeding season. The lab tech told us they really don't know why they get this; when you cut them open, their bellies are full of water--no feed or anything. And pretty much no blood. And it's almost like their skin sloughs off before they die. Our neighbor told Chan he was gonna try a new feed with sea salt in it---no research says it will work cause it's new, but can't hurt. But our pond isn't eating, so we can't try that right now. Chandler said when they do start back, he's gonna go to Brad's and get a load to feed to see if it helps. May be grabbing at straws, but when you're desperate. . . .
One good thing---the tractor in that pond ended up being a quick easy fix

any updates on how its going?
They seem ( ) to not be dying anymore. And they are hitting the top of the water like they want to eat, which is an improvement. Plus they're starting to sink, which makes it look much better. He fed fish while we were feeding horses, so I'm not sure if they ate any tonight or not. We appreciate every single one of you so very much for prayers and checking in on us.
Edited to add: Chan said he fed them about 800 pounds, and they ate a little. Not like normal by any means, but that they are eating some is a good sign. Keep praying y'all!!!

Any update on Chandler's Pond?
They have stopped dying, thank the good Lord! And they are eating again, which is a very good sign. They are like horses in that regard---you know something is bad wrong when they won't eat. We don't really know how many he lost, but at least it wasn't the whole pond. And like some of y'all reminded me, God has His plan, and even when bad things happen, doors are still opening elsewhere. . . Thank y'all for being there for me and him during this situation and ALL the others you have supported us thru. There are some amazing people on here |
