I'm new to owning a stallion and I'm trying to get his name out there. With that I have enrolled him in some incentive programs and am looking at a few others. As mare owners which incentives matter to you, or do they at all? Thanks

Do you have your own mares to breed ????
I found that you can tell people how nice your boy is till you are blue in the face and offer free breedings to good mares and incentives and everything and it will not mean squat till his get are out there winning.

I also agree. I think it's important to prove your stallion as a performer and then as a producer. As a mare owner, I looked at pedigree, conformation, performance record, produce record, resale value of foals, and then stallion incentives were just a bonus.

As far as incentives go, the main one that attracted me was Future Fortunes. Several years ago I had people specifically looking for prospects enrolled in FF. I honestly don't know if that's going to change or not with the change in the program. I always enrolled my eligible foals in FF as well as WPRA's PESI. The BBR Select Stallions is something I've been hearing more about, but I honestly haven't looked into it that closely. There are also some incentives that are more regional. You might consider ones that are in your area as that might draw more local interest.

I'm now on the other side of it, as a stallion owner starting out like you are. I'm breeding a handful of my own mares just to get some foals on the ground. My focus for now is to get him proven. I'm not ready to offer him to the public yet, but when I do I'll focus on advertising. At that point I'll look into incentives, but he needs to be able to sell himself with his pedigree, conformation, and performance record.

Since you live where I do, BRN4D and VGBRA are two of the most cost effective programs. You will get good national advertising and cater to the local people. IMO FF is a waste of money unless you are breeding 20+ outside mares a year or you have deep pockets and need the tax write off. There's no way you can recover the cost on a handful of foals a year. Plus if you enroll before you get some 4 & 5 year olds in the arena you're paying for zero chance to win any money back. Plus they only pay the stallion owner 10% when the stallion owner is their cash cow. There are better programs and there are worse. So be sure to ask yourself what can they do for me. Some programs only want your money and once they have it, they give nothing back.
