What is the best supplement to get rid of ulcers? And the best preventative? Please nothing super pricey.
My horse won't eat/ perform her best at 3 day shows.

I get a compound from my vet that is omeprazole, ranitidine, and sucralfate together. Might try seeing if any vets close to you can get it made. Mine is $300 for the full 30 day treatment. I've dealt with them in my black gelding for years with no success until this last year. He gets them so bad they'll come up into his larynx. I'd do the 30 day omeprazole and he'd scope clear and then a week later be absolutely full of them again. Worst case my vet had ever seen. I'd treat him with the 30 days 4-5 times a year and never get ahead with them. The end of last year I did the 30 days and started MVP Gastro-Plex at the same time and haven't had any issues yet. Went from having awful gate issues to going right in, and let me tell you we had gate issues. He once climbed onto the hood of someones truck to get away from the gate, he'd climb panels, he knocked horses in the warm up to the ground, hurt himself and not even care. Most argument I've had this year lasted maybe 10 seconds and that was a place where he's taken me right out of the building at before, I'd say that's his worst arena ever. The thing with treating with omeprazole or ranitidine is that you buffer the stomach so the ulcers can heal, but once you stop the stomach goes into overdrive producing twice the amount of acid. So by treating one that way you can clear them, but then once you take that drug away you can create them again. Thats what I was doing, he'd get ulcers without ever leaving home or even being ridden.

The Gastro-Plex keeps the stomach buffered at all times so when I stopped the omeprazole, his stomach didn't going into overdrive producing the acid. So I've gone almost a full year since initial treatment and have had no issues. And I've tried almost every method, vet recommended to old wives tales to you name it on different treatments/preventatives. And I was going to retire him early if I couldn't find something last year. And it was Sharon Camarillo that told me about the omeprazole causing ulcers and so I gave it a shot with the Gastro-Plex and it was a "miracle" so to speak for me. Even my vet has been shocked at the outcome, especially since I've hauled harder this year than in previous years because its FUN again. After years of gate arguments you get so mad before you even get in the gate that even the adrenaline of the run doesn't take the anger away. So I barely hauled last year and now I've been going a lot.

Since the product worked so well for me I became an MVP Ambassador and I use many of their products, so if anyone has questions or wants info feel free to pm me. We've got some deals going on I can talk to you about :). But each horse is different and there are a variety of other products that I know have worked well for others, this is just what worked for me. My best advice is just give things time to make a difference, don't expect and overnight miracle and you may have to try 5 things before you find what works best. I know I probably tried 30 different things in the last 5 years with this horse, so it takes time.

It may be some trial an error to see what works best. For a buffering supplement I really like neighlox advanced. I give it when I trailer anywhere. Daily use I use U7 by finish line. Both have worked better than anything I've tried and my two horses who both had ulcers haven't had an issues since. I may be the odd man out, but THE gastroPLUS did nothing for either of my horses. If your issues are when you travel i suggest ulcergard when your at shows.

I had really good results using omeprazole, then followed up with THE gastroplus. I currently keep my horse on excel from depaolo equine concepts as a preventative and haven't had anymore issues since last winter.
