What do you do when your horse has a runny nose only out of one nostril? Said horse had cough a couple of weeks back and was looked at by vet who recommended taking off round bale. Horse was doing very well until the snotty nose appeared. (Doing great otherwise). Had two doses of penicillin a couple weeks ago when cough wouldn't go away so not sure if should give another round of antibiotics or not

Does the drainage have a foul smell to it? Since it's only one nostril, it could be a sinus/tooth infection. I would have the vet take another look before deciding to start abx on your own, that's where resistance comes from. Good luck!

I would definitely have your vet take a look at him, hopefully it's nothing too major!

I would still check teeth VERY WELL. I had a mare that had a very bad tooth that was over looked and caused big issues.

Absolutely, just because there isn't a foul smell, it could still be a tooth abscess/infection or sinus infection. Smell is always a good indicator of infection, but it isn't the only indicator.

I'm always quick to have my husband look at our horses with any sort of issue, and it's better in the long run to have a vet take a look in the beginning and nip something in the bud, rather than trying to heal an issue weeks after it started.

My mare did this and she had a gutteral pouch infection. When I called my vet, he had me tie her head up for 10 minutes then let her go. When she was tied, there was no runny nostril. When she dropped her head it started running. Maybe give that a try? You don't want to mess with a gutteral pouch infection. Once we did the trick, he had me bring her in and she had to be treated.

How long did you horse have a snotty nose before taking her in? The first couple days it would run & dry up now it's mostly always runny. Been going on a week now.
