Location: midwest mama | I have an 11 year old mare that I trained and is an amazing barrel horse. Runs consistent 17.1s - 17.3s on a standard set - when I let my friend run her. Problem is we really don't fit each other. She is very strong in the turn and I like something smoother. She is also a very insecure/nervous horse and I prefer something that is level and quiet. I would rather get a horse revved up before a run than to have to keep one quiet and settled.
She has never done anything bad and always works, but she gets me very nervous before we run and that makes it not fun for me. I am getting to where I'm dreading hauling her - and even being around her at home is a challenge for me.
How do you know when it's time to sell? It's SO hard to let go of a good one but I know our partnership is not good for either of us. She needs a more confident calm rider and I need a more confident quiet horse. Anyone else have to make this decision? If so, how did you do it?

| Sounds like you've already done what you need to do. You've compared the horse to your likes/needs. The horse doesn't match what you need/like. |

| Im with everyone else, when you are not longer enjoying it and dreading it. Time to move them on. These animals are waaaaay to expensive to have if you don't fully enjoy them and so is this sport. |

| I think it is time, bottom line is enjoying your horse and being able to look forward to hauling and going. I am a 3D rider so I don’t want to put up with anything, but there are lots of quirky horses that are true 1D that good riders don’t mind putting up with because they can clock. Congrats on training such a nice mare. |

| Yep, time to move that mare on to someone else. If you don't like to compete on her, sell her. Sounds like a good horse someone else is looking for. Barrel racing is just tooo EVERYTHING to not have fun. (expensive, hard work, challenging.....) |

Location: on the fine line between insanity and geniusness | When you said itβs no longer fun- THAT is the exact moment to sell and get something else. I put up with one quirky weirdo because he is a 1d horse, but I also haul my husbands head horse that clocks in the middle of the 2d because heβs fun and easy. I have to have him to balance out my goonie! When worry takes the fun out of it- MOVE ON! Bo Hill told me once to never hit the breaks in a mud hole and that has stuck with me for years! |
