So with my mare getting up in years I thought I should start looking at other horses. What are some good bloodlines to be aware of when shopping?

What will you be using the new horse for? Barrels? Roping? Breeding? Showing? It's hard to choose one place to start, as there are so many good lines and crosses out there. How is your older mare bred?

I'll be using him/her for barrel racing. My older mare isn't papered, but she has really good conformation and a great temperament. I have thought about breeding her, but I don't have the money right now to do that. I've been looking at started and finished barrel horses between the ages of 5-10., need advice on good bloodlines as I am still relatively new to the barrel racing scene.

All depends on what you like! I like pretty much everything (running bred, cow bred, Thoroughbreds lol). But some popular names you might see are:
Dash Ta Fame
Frenchmans Guy
Corona Cartel
Firewater Flit
A Streak of Fling
Bully Bullion
Strawfly Special
Streakin Six
PC Frenchmans Hayday
Dash For Cash
Alive N Firen
Judge Cash

And a bunch more lol you will notice that certain ones (like Dash Ta Fame) cost a lot more.

Honestly, I love looking at bloodlines but based on what you are looking at, older horses already running, I would go with what is actually in front of you versus what theoretically should be in front of you based on bloodlines. Now if you buy a registered mare and want to breed some day, I would look for top notch bloodlines that will be marketable some day. But if you are just looking for one to compete on, buy the one you like best and get along with that runs a nice set.

This. To me, bloodlines are only useful if you’re looking at unproven stock or breeding stock. Geldings of the age range and training you’re looking at should have plenty of track record to show you what they’re made of.

It also varies so much on what you like. We’re drawn to the smaller short coupled cowbreds for their quick catty style that gets on well in the smaller pens around here. If you run a lot of wide open outdoor pens, papers with more run on them might get on better.

I think it all depends on what your price range is too. My dream has always been to have a DTF daughter and breed to FG, but I'd have to sell my house to afford that and live in the stall with the horse lol. I know realistically I'll never be able to have that, simply because of the cost and that the farther in the future it is, the slimmer the chances due to availability.

The black gelding I have now has been a super horse and he has no running lines in him. He's 99.9% foundation, King and Peppy right on his papers, which usually theyre a lot farther out. He was bred very carefully to preserve those lines, each generation is well over 10 years between in ages. He has maxed out at the bottom of the 2D, so he doesn't have speed but he has a killer smooth turn style. And I couldn't ask for better bone structure, he's got indestructible legs. His fetlocks are the size of most horse's knees. I cut him at 7 years old and regret it, he would have made a great cross on a running bred mare I think. He can be an ass sometimes, but he'd step off a cliff if I ever asked him to. He may not like it, but he'll do it for me. I'd take another bred like him just because of the conformation, he's 18 and looks like he's 10-12 still.

My 3 year old I just got in August isn't one I ever thought I'd get. She's a daughter of Six Moons Bully out of an Alive N Firen daughter, MY FIRE N APRIL. Lance Graves has a 2 year old out of the same mare, but his sire is DTF. I never thought I'd get a Bully Bullion horse, I've seen more that I don't like than I do like locally. I had gone to look at another where she was at and didn't really like him, so I figured I drove 1.5 hours out of my way after a barrel race, might as well ride as many as they have in my budget. From her BHW ad, she looked so awkward. I thought there's no way this is the same horse. Her ad was from her in an awkward 2 year old phase, and she looks so different now. Nobody came to look at her for months of being listed, the picture was so awful it ruined the good things stated in the ad about her. She rode like a dream with only around 60 days on her, stretched out from March-August so it wasn't a consistent 60 days. I've been on her 3 times since August and she rides nice every time, always tries so hard to figure out what I'm wanting from her and I love that. She falls apart if you pressure her too much, but she's young and just needs some confidence still. My favorite about her breeding is she's similar to Sharpie, and I like his style.

My friends have A Sharp Frenchman babies soon to be started and they're lookers, so I think I may cross her on him in the future and see what happens. Sharpie is one of my favorites on the scene right now. Epic Leader is also one of my favorite bloodlines. BHR Frenchies Socks has some nice colts around as well.

If you are newer to barrel racing I would look into the most user friendly bloodlines. However, yes I would look at the specific horse and how you get along with that particular horse.

I personally love the user friendly, quiet minded horses that I can enjoy for a long time but safe for most people.

My current gelding isn't bred very well and I bought him because he was a good deal and also because he seemed to have a lot of what I was looking for.

My up and coming mare is a PC Joes Frost daughter, he is deceased but all of his colts seem to be so well minded. I have worked with quite a few now. But I think the Boon Dox John and Sunfrost combo is just a naturally well minded, athletic horse.
