I usually run my gelding in a simple large twisted wire o-ring. I recently hurt my shoulder and I am unable to pull him around on the third barrel. I am unable to lift a water bucket. He is the type that does not rate much at the barrels and takes two steps and is gone. Also want to note that I can not put anything severe on him, he will not work. This go as far as he will try to lay down if you put anything but a one ear headstall on him.

Maybe try a twisted wire Sweet 6 bit?

I am not sure what your gelding would consider severe, but maybe a bit with a higher purchase, but still a gentle mouthpiece would work and give you a little leverage.

I have a couple of "perfect" bits with short shank, but they have a high purchase and get a quicker reaction out of my mare - I run her in it, but had to take it off when we were being the "demonstrators" at an obstacle course clinic series. She was too quick to react when we were doing tight fit backing, sidepass, etc.

I like the million dollar bit for my mare. She will fight you until you are blue in the face if you try to put something harsh in her mouth...I typically only use a very basic snaffle on her-BUT for barrel work I switch to the other. For her, I think the action of the nose piece really helped. She was always the type to blow out of her turns (from not listening to the bit/leg).

Huge fan of the Carol Goostree bits! Work very well on light mouthed horses, especially the simplicity or delight! I have them in all the mouth pieces and the dog bone and smooth mouth with chain center are my favorites.

My gelding is very sensitive also, but needs a little help finishing his turns. We practice with a chain mouth piece, and compete in a mullen mouth with a noseband...still very light, but gives me a little more help pulling him around the turns. There is not much whoa in this bit though, so if you need any whoa, I wouldn't suggest this =]

I will try the bits suggested. I’m sure one of them will work. I attached a video so you can see what he is doing. He has plenty of whoa running back so that shouldn’t be an issue. Just don’t mind my first barrel i missed my spot and it was my fault he went by it. You will see me shift my weight at the third to try and use that to help.

The lifesaver tender touch is a light bit. I run my mare in this one. I used to run her in a dog bone short shank but she got pushy in it.

draw gag ... I have a couple made by Dave Elliot and they work really well for horses who are light and responsive, but need that finish on the back side of the barrels, I have one Elliot I got this summer, I've won over $2k in it by the first 30 days of having it!
