Has anyone ever made an absolute complete career change? So I'm 28 with 4 year old twin daughters. I have spent many years in school and finally got my bachelor's degree in accounting last year and I am now 33 days away from graduating with my master's in business administration. I work full-time for the state as an accountant and have been here for about 6 months. prior to this I have held other accounting positions with the state. Honestly, I have a problem of not wanting to stay at a job past like 6-8 months because I get bored or start hating it. I am at that point with this job now. I am bored out of my mind and I dread getting up every day to sit and stare at a computer and cubicle walls all day long. I really don't know what to do at this point though. I am so over school after all these years so I don't see myself getting a different degree. Even if I did, I don't know what I would do.

Contact head hunters about being a drug rep, flexible hours, good pay and benefits.

That's a good idea. It would get you out of the cubicle and out on the road.

I'm a lot like that. Every job I ever had, I was always staring out the window or taking every opportunity just to walk outside for any reason! Good thing you realized your need to change now, before you have too much time in at one place. You are still young enough that you can try some different avenues and find the right fit for you. Where I work, they don't care what kind of degree you have, they just have a preference for people who have earned any degree.

I got my bachelor’s in animal science and was on the vet school track when I first started working as a veterinary assistant at an equine hospital. I realized I had glamorized being an equine vet, and after about a year of working there, I had decided not to pursue vet school. I continued to work there for years, eventually meeting my husband when he was hired on as an equine vet. I continued to be his tech, until we decided to strike out on our own.
The plan was either I find a good job in his hometown (where we wanted to move to) that could support us as we start our family and a solo equine practice, or wait until we had saved up enough to take the leap.
I ended up taking a job as a Communications Deputy for the local Sheriff’s Office, and I am a dispatcher for police, fire and EMS for 911 and non-emergency calls for the entire county. I absolutely love it, even though I never would have pictured myself doing this. Great pay, amazing benefits, yes some stress, but having our horses and getting to help my husband on his calls helps.

If you’re going to take a risk, make sure it’s a calculated risk.

I've been an accountant for 30+ years and I still love my job. In school they woo you with tales of being a public accountant and how much you can make (of course many, many years ago). In actuality, since I lived in a small town that really didn't work out. I did find a job with a manufacturing company. Best thing I could have ever done. Manufacturing accounting is like working for 2 companies. You have the production aspects - inventory control, costing, manning, etc. and then the financial aspects of putting together monthly financials. There is lots of analysis that needs to be done - you don't want to wait until the end of the month to know if you are doing good or bad. You need to react quickly. A good accountant at a manufacturing company will spend time on the production floor to fully understand the processes so you can give analysis info to management.

Accounting also gives you options for many other companies or positions. I've seen accountants become sales managers, materials/inventory managers and even plant managers. Lots and lots of options available if you just spend the time researching and reaching out. My daughter was an accountant at Build a Bear corporate for a few years and she got involved in lots of different aspects such as inventory in England.

Don't give up. Expand your horizons.

Good luck.

If your get restless feet at the 6-8 month point at every job you've ever had, it's more likely "culture shock" setting in than it is an issue with the job. Just because the shiny and new has worn off and you are bored is no reason to leave a job. You need to consider your resume, lifestyle, 5-10-15 year goals, the soft perks like hours and a positive environment. . .

I can get behind not enjoying your career, but the degrees you have chosen have a lot of flexibility. You'll do alright.

I thought I would enjoy accounting too, but I guess I just haven't gotten in the right area of it yet. That's my problem though, I have no idea what is actually out there or what my possibilities are. Everything that I come across wants 5+ years experience in addition to a degree. I guess I just feel like I'm stuck in a rut because I have no idea what I would actually want to do or how to go about getting there. Living in Baton Rouge, LA there are jobs out there but they are not very plentiful at all.

I have a degree in Mass Communications (newspaper, radio, Tv), and I graduated as one of the best and the brightest and could not get a good job. I worked in my field for about 3 years, suffered through the Job from Hell working for the Devil Herself right out of college for a year and a half, sales at a radio station for about 3 months - not my thing, and as sports reporter for a small town newspaper. I realized I loved the creative aspect, but hated the extremely low pay, very long hours and the general attitude of the Media.
I lucked into working at a title company in Fort Worth, Texas, and I have been in the industry for 25 years - and I love being a title examiner. As I look back, the one mistake I made was not being realistic about a media job and realizing that a career that requires some sort of certification is not a waste of time and money spent at college.
I have friends that work as accountants in agricultural businesses, and for the government. Not all accounting jobs are in a cubicle staring at a computer all day. If you love the numbers aspect, change your company.

Spend some time in deep thought.

What makes you restless? Are you bored with your job? Not challenged by it? Hate the cubicle life?

What do you think would make it better? Different work environment? More interaction with people? Higher level accounting?

Until you can figure out what it is you feel is lacking, I don’t advise doing anything. Changing jobs every 6-8 months is a resume wrecker.

What size city are you in? I suggest looking into the private sector. For example, I’m a buyer at a large grain processor. We have a total of 12 people in our office, 8 buyers and 4 accountants. We all work in an open style office and interact with each other. I had 1 internship in college that was in a cubicle farm and HATED it, never again. Our accountants are doing everything from day to day contract settlements to helping other plants transition to some new software and developing audit procedures etc.

Leaving the field entirely may also be the answer - but jumping ship and then jumping ship again in 6-8mos is not going to make it easy to continue getting on with professional level firms.

My dad said the exact same thing to me. He went from a poor farm boy to head of foreign accounts in an oil company. He spent several years in the Middle East in the 60’s and 70’s. Specifically, Beirut, Cairo, Lebanon and Tripoli, where my little brother was born. In fact, we were there when Kadifi(?) came into power and so we had to leave. My dad was part of the negotiation team that got most of their heavy equipment back from Kadifi. He was also part of the negotiations to recover heavy equipment for the oil companies when Egypt took their equipment. By the way, he never took the CPA test. My aunt did, though and was one of the first women in Texas to become a millionaire on her own. She was also in the oil industry and also real estate.
