I want to start by saying this dog will be seeing a vet tomorrow if the knot is still there tomorrow.

My boyfriend's blue heeler somehow managed to escape her pen today while he was at work and get loose on their dirt road. She came home tonight covered in mud, limping slightly, and with a large, hard knot under her neck. He thinks she may have been hit by a car.

He gave her a bath and checked her over, and she seems like she will be fine, but I'm concerned about the knot. She doesn't seem bothered by it and it isn't tender to the touch.
What could the knot be? Should I be as worried as I am?

I am a worrier so I can see your side! Definitely have a vet look her over, and let us know how she is please.

Update:
A family friend who is a vet told us to just keep an eye on her for a couple of days and see if it goes down on its own.
Well, it's not going down. If anything, it may have grown a little bit. She will be seeing a vet in the morning
