I ordered a north face soft shell to ride in. It came today and I can't get my arms up in it so it's not going to work. What do you love to ride in on cold/windy and damp days? I haven't been fortunate enough to win a rodeo jacket. Would prefer something similar to the north face.

I have several soft shell jackets but none of them North Face. 1 is a Roper jacket and I liked it so much that I actully got a vest of the same brand. Both are slightly fitted, so they do restrict me a bit in my movements (the jackets more so than the vest obviously). I also have one that is bigger and therefor make it easier for me to move around.
And I have a Carhartt with hood which is also a great windbreaker.  And I have some oilskin jackets for when it might rain.
Maybe you need to go up a size with the North Face to give you more room for movement.

All my riding coats (and everyday coats) are mountain hardwear. They’re made very well and hold up great. I have a non-insulated soft shell that is very wind and waterproof. I also have an insulated one that’s great too. I used to think North Face was the cats meow when I was younger, but truthfully you’re just paying for a name, not a quality product.

Edited to add: if you’re on a budget, you can check eBay for good deals on new coats or buy one that is used for a fraction of the price a new one would cost. If you’re riding in wet weather a lot, make sure to get a coat with taped/covered zippers.

I have an Eddie Bauer down coat that I scored brand new at the thrift store for $6, and I’m surprised I haven’t worn that thing out- it is my favorite coat to ride in. I also have a Wrangler Wridge Rider sherpa lined corduroy coat that’s at least 30 years old that had been kept in storage and was handed down to me in brand new condition. If it’s too warm for a coat like those, I like to layer long sleeved shirts with sweatshirts and oversized flannel or denim shirts.

I have a couple Mountain Hardware monkey fleece jackets I got for super cheap, and they are amazing quality, however everything sticks to them! They wash really well though, and don’t pill.

There’s an app I use, Poshmark, to buy and sell clothing, and I enjoy making a bit of money, as well as clearing out my closet (and finding really good deals!) I don’t like paying full price for a lot of things.

I usually ride in a hoodie, Carhartt vest, and wild rag.

Meybe you can give me an idea of what size I would wear.......
I'm 5'4" and about 120 pounds, pretty average framed, etc.
Do you think I would wear a medium?  I really dislike ordering clothing without trying on first but I really like the looks of the STS coats.

Thanks
  :)

Let me double check the size of mine this eve!

My guess would be yes, a medium, that way if you need to layer you can! It is a great coat, not bulky or heavy on the shoulders, easy to move in.

I have tried other coats and always go back to carhartt. Yeah they are heavy but they are warm and easy care. Wash and dry. I don’t ride in the pouring rain so I can’t vouch for a coat for that. Carhartts do leak after a while. But I’ll just deal with it. Soft shells leak too. I have several of them and they are just ok. Seems stiff to move in and not enough give. But they are nice. I can’t find where to buy horsewear. That brand sounded good. Yes wild rags are a must. And ear warmers or a stormy Kromer hat

I think the key to stayng warm while riding is what you are wearing under your clothes, i have some really good longJohns that I love and some super warm socks, I love a med/lite jacket that dont bunch up so I can move around in, but the the better under garments you have on the warmer you will stay..
