If you ran in a “progressive” barrel race, and the producer had a saddle side pot that was optional, for an extra $20 each race. There were ten races total. This is ASIDE from normal entry fees. At the end of the series, the saddle side pot was at $1440. How much of that would you expect to see going for a saddle certificate?

*Producer never stated if there would be a cut taken out or anything*

As a sidepot? I would hope that the majority, if not all would go towards it. Considering a side pot has no additional overhead cost.

A side pot that did not pay anything out each race- most  all of it, if not all.

That’s kinda along the lines that I would’ve thought. I won the saddle. But have been informed that the certificate will be for $620. And the remainder is going towards the progressive buckles and other awards. When I questioned why a side saddle pot should fund other awards (that should be funded by their own entry fees),I was made to sound ungrateful, told that they can refund my saddle pot entry money, and give the certificate to second place.

humm are sure this happened in arizona? I mean it sounds like a gas tax being used for the browndoggle instead of the roads! I could have sworn this was the california special saddle tax race series. tell everyone it is for the saddle then steal the money and use it for other prizes.

seriously are you sure it wasn't  a pot for awards for a saddle series? Not just advertised as the saddle pot?i see that a lot.

No it was definitely a saddle side pot, because it’s the first year they did a side pot. Lol. There was no rules or exceptions except that 8 of 10 races had to be attended to be eligible for the saddle.

that's not a very good return and what kind of saddle can you by for that? That's not worth doing bc you paid almost 200 if I am reading correct. I wouldn't do it again! That's a shame bc winning a saddle a big deal! at least to me anyways!

I would say at least 80% is what I would expect (looking at it from a "payback" standpoint". That would be $1152.

Was the saddle brand or anything told/adverstised before the series started?

Are there actually producers who decide to buy a better saddle, buckle or any prize, just because there were a lot of people that attended and "nominated"?   There could be a lot less than expected that nominate or a lot more, but I thought it was the producers chance they take.  Also, some prizes are donated, so the producer just keeps the extra money.

Not saying it is necessarily the best thing as far as the contestant's money goes...which is one of the reasons that I usually do not pay extra for the slim chance to win an award - I'd rather pay more money and have it go to the payout!

ETA - I just saw that you won the saddle - congratulations!!!  (I won a saddle certificate this year for $750, but I'm having to save money to pay extra to get one from the shop that fits my horse  - lol, but I'm still happy that I won it --- I know what you are saying, also).

ETA AGAIN ---- Maybe I am mistaking a "sidepot" for "saddle nomination" -- I haven't seen a saddle "sidepot" done, then, if that is what you are saying....

Just my opinion...

If there were no rules or guarantees made, other than "saddle", I'd take the certificate and not waste my $20/show next year.
That's really crappy though...even if they pre-planned the saddle value based on estimated entries...the amount you got is based on 3 entries/show, really? I'd expect AT LEAST $1000.
Where can you use this certificate?

It will be a Corriente certificate. And to whomever said about me putting $200 in for the side pot in total, yes. My side pot entires was $200, as well as everyone else who put in for the saddle.

Last year, they awarded a saddle to first place as well, but didn’t have an extra side pot fee. So that means they afforded all additional awards, buckles, etc. and STILL afforded a saddle without any extra being paid for entries.

This year, the producers brought in over $1400 extra with the saddle side pot entries. Producer told me that the certificate amount was pre-chosen and wasn’t subject to change, regardless of how much money the side pot accumulated. But this wasn’t said until AFTER the series wrapped up, and wasn’t stated on entry forms. I just feel that they should’ve informed everyone prior to people paying the additional fee. So now, for the saddle I’ve chosen, I’m gonna have to pay an additional $800. The saddle certificate will only cover the very base model. Which I get, is beneficial for the producer.

I just feel kinda jipped. And for their “remedy”, they just said they will give me back my entry fees of $200 and give the cert to someone more appreciative. I’m not trying to be a jerk about it. But I do think it’s wrong and I definitely won’t be attending their races any more.

What’s even funnier is they asked me to help advertise their races, which I did.

I would take the $200 refund and not do it again next year. Maybe print this thread off and give it to them.

I'd probably take the refund too, just because I wouldnt want a Corriente, especially if I had to spend more to get it.

Lol, I happen to like the Corrientes, when they’re customized.?This will be my third actually. So I have no issue with that. A $620 certificate is better than getting my $200 for me. At least I’ll be getting something out of the fact that my mare made some nice runs. Getting a refund would seem even more like throwing those runs away.

I totally get why you feel that way!

There’s getting to be so many races around here to choose from that I tend to pick the ones that are well run, well organized, with rules that are clearly explained on the flyer and don’t leave me with more questions.

Lesson learned I say, I probably wouldn’t participate next year without clarification of rules.

In my opinion that's a shady thing to do. If they knew how much the saddle certificate was going to be they should have advertised that from the beginning not at the end. Sounds like the producer is trying to make up for short comings elsewhere. You're not even getting half of the side pot. If you went to a race and entered a side pot and they only paid out 50% of the fees would you enter --- most would say no.

Seems shady and I could see why you'd be upset. Sorry this happened to you.
