I'm needing some help y'all.

What is the most you've ever spent buying a horse?
What D?
Was the horse worth it?

I have bought on all ends of the spectrum. I’ve spent 6 figures on a futurity colt that accomplished dreams that I never thought I’d see come to fruition. She was in the top 5 in the nation, won a Congress title, set arena records, etc. I kept her for a few years and sold her for what I paid for her, plus I had all that she won. Then- I also spent $500 on one that won over 130k for me and is still the head honcho at my place at the ripe old age of 23. He is standing around waiting for my little boy to get old enough to ride him. In my opinion both of them were worth every single penny I paid!

I spent $6500 for one that everyone thought I was crazy for buying.  Yes, I am crazy, but that time I was crazy like a fox! Back in the "old days" he was still in the $1000 novice class, before the "D" system.  I got him fit, tweaked a few things with him, changed headgear and he went to winning or placing high in everything around here in the 1D.  The times he didn't win me money were times I made a lot of pilot error.  I was asked "how did you know" about his potential more times than I could count. I can't explain it, but I could just feel it, the first time I rode him.  He's the paint horse in my avatar.

I paid $3000 for a very well broke cow bred mare and did all the barrel training myself. She's 3D local, 4D big show, but has won A TON in those divisions, plus buckles, saddles, etc... She paid for herself in 2 years easily and you can literally do ANYTHING with her. What is she worth today? I wouldn't let her go for less than 10k but I also don't need the $$. WORTH EVERY PENNY.

I picked up a nice mare last winter for $8500, consistent 2D anywhere you take her. Had some lameness issues this spring/summer, she's back to going now and I suspect will be better than she was when I bought her because she wasn't well taken care of. I need more time with her to tell, but she's bred right, so even as a broodmare, she's worth the $$.

19 of the 21 horses I've purchased have turned out to be well worth the money we paid for them. Prices ranged rom "free" to $20k. The 2 that I wouldn't consider worth what we gave for them, well that's part of it. Lol! Hopefully only 2 out of the next 20+ purchases will be duds.

I raise pretty much everything I compete on but I did buy a 1D/prorodeo money winner for $800 out of a sale barn. I won a lot of money on him and he was one of the best horses I've ever ridden.

I have discovered that if the horse makes me happy, they are worth every penny no matter what I spent.

The most I have ever paid was $4000. Nice gelding with a really nice foundation. Ending up having to sell him (at a loss) because he turned into a bucking bronco at a big 3 day race I took him too.

I paid $3000 in 2004 for my now 25 year old gelding. He was worth every penny and the most (at that time) I had ever spent on a horse. Prior to that I think I only paid on average about $1000 (or less) for a horse.

I have never bought a barrel horse but have given some substantial amounts for breeding animals.

I have discovered that if the horse makes me happy, they are worth every penny no matter what I spent.

I bought my last mare at an auction last year and went over the limit I had set, and basically more than I should have. When I hit our "limit" my husband turned to me and said--don't stop now. I thank goodness he did! Love that mare and enjoy her every day, she is absolutely perfect for us. She isn't winning the world but she is still young and improving, is talented, athletic, willing, easy to ride, beautiful and just a pleasure to own. And if I had tried to buy her this year she would have cost twice as much. So yes, we think she is worth every penny we spent, I'm grateful every day that we kept bidding.

Love how much everyone here loves their horses <3 Warms my heart!! The most I spent was 6500 on a namebrand ish horse with 30 days. She was a great 3D horse! We just didn't click though. The fastest mare I had, I spent 500 bucks on, she died last year, and was an awesome 2D horse! My main horse now, I claimed for 3500, and I have a 2 year old waiting to be broke that I got for a few hundred as a neglected yearling =] I agree, it doesn't matter how much you spend, if you think it's worth it, then it is! You can't take money with you, but memories you can =]

If there was an award for the cheapest set of 1D/2D/Rodeo horses out there, I'd be in contention for it! I'm either cheap, a bargain hunter, incredibly lucky, or handy enough to buy projects and end up with tough horses.

My gray is the most expensive one I've ever bought. He was a little less than $3,000 as a broke 4 year old trotting the pattern. I finished him, seasoned him, and about the time he turned 7, started rodeoing on him. He placed 2nd at the first rodeo I ever entered him in with the hope of placing (He had loped through in the mud a couple times as a 4 & 5 year old).  As a 10 year old, he made the URA Finals, and we made it back this year. I went in with high hopes of at least placing in a round or two, and he blew me away by winning the 2nd & 3rd rounds and the average to move us from 12th to 4th for the year. His lifetime earnings have got to be approaching $40K - this year alone he has won over $8K on just 52 runs (including a few with nasty pilot errors and more "cry hole" finishes than I want to count).  He costs some extra to maintain, but he has turned out to be quite the bargain. In the back of my mind, I keep thinking he might be the next youth rodeo superstar for my friend who rides my old gelding....if the old $300 sale barn steal ever decides to retire. LOL.

My other rodeo horses cost $1200 and $750. The $1200 one was a fix-it project that ***knock on wood**** hasn't been hard to fix at all! His main thing was a gate issue but I've only had trouble a few times on him and none recently. He's also super hard to ride but I keep trying because he is a beast on crappy shallow rodeo ground, and I need one of those in the lineup! Totally worth the money!!!!

My 3rd rodeo horse has the most talent, and I bought him based solely on potential. He has won several rodeos for me, and just this fall has started to be calm and consistent. He's hot hot hot and it has taken a long time to figure out how to handle him correctly, but he's got so much talent it's scary.  This horse is my mud monster, a freaky fast pole horse if I could keep up, and I think he's worth every penny and then some.  I'm hoping that 2018 is the year he gets his life together and conquers the world....no matter how many barrels I have to leg lift over!

Everything from free up through 5 figures. My favorite/easiest mare who is consistently in the 2D was $4500 as a 4 yr old ranch horse who had trotted through the pattern a hand full of times. Everything with "designer lines" that I have I either bought as weanlings or bred for, so I don't feel like they count lol

Mine is all over the board from the past 20 years.
10 yr old mare running 1/2D times $10k. She had foundation breeding and some barrel racing. Best horse but the most challenging
4 yr old gelding with nice breeding and 90 days. $5500. His career ended in 2 years due to a bone spur. Was placing 3/4D times (he never was finished on barrels)
17 yr old gelding with ok breeding. Running solid 2D times. $6000.
10 yr old unregistered Appy mare. $1200. Solid 1/2D horse. Won a bunch of races on her.

I make my purchases based on personality and the willingness to work.

I guess the most I have spent on horses was on broodmares. Not cheap if you are looking at the popular barrel racing/racing bloodlines.
