Location: Opelousas, LA | Anyone ever use these feeders? I feed square bales to my horses in the pasture and I need to find something to keep it out of the mud this winter.

Location: mi | I have not used that type before. But from my experience if you are going to fill it up, most of that hay is going to get flipped onto the ground anyways. If your only going half way it should be deep enough for it not to flip out of the feeder. If you only have a couple horses I use this one and it works great and stays put unless you have a horse that is itchy. With my itchy horse in the summer i find it knocked over at least once a week. With my normal horses it never goes anywhere. :)

| I am not sold on the design you're talking about but where I used to board used these and they worked well. They'll fit a round bale or a couple small squares.

I saw that one a couple weeks ago and really like the design! I like that it is smaller, you could just throw in one square bale at a time and they'd always have fresh hay. I'd like to get one when we finally finish our barn and move our horses, my 2 geldings will be in a small pasture by themselves when they're turned out instead of in the big field. I imagine this would keep things neater and easy for me to move and fill up. |

| Not a fan of the design personally, still leaves for a lot of hay loss IMO.
We currently have a small bale in a chix slow feed net hung in each run. 1 bale lasts 1 horse 1.5-2.0 full days depending on the size of the bale to start out with for 3 of our 4 horses. We have 1 piggie who my husband is convinced is just out to bankrupt us.
If I needed to protect the bales from the elements I would be looking at the Natural Feeders from Blanchfield Livestock. They are local to me and I don’t know what the cost of shipping would be, but folks around here love them and they save a lot of hay. |

Location: Opelousas, LA | Thanks for all the info! I think I am going to order a couple of hay baskets, we have a dealer right down the road so freight won't be an issue. I will come back and update after I have used them, our pasture is just sooo wet right now it's hard to find a dry place to even put the hay when we feed it on the ground. |

Location: Conroe, TX 77304 | I put a bale in a slow feeder hay net that holds a whole bale at a time and put it in a rubber water thruough put 2 logs in it first and put a rack on top of that to keep the water off of it. Works really well and a lot cheaper than all of these others do. |

Location: Missouri | We love our hay basket from Tarter. I can easily fit two bales with no waste. If I put three in, they will flip some out. This is our third winter using it and it has held up well. |

Location: mi | Talking about feeders. Does anyone have this round bale feeder? Does it actually save some of the hay? My biggest issue with round bales is that I only have 2 horses in the pasture so it takes them forever to eat an entire round bale and normally the waist a good portion spreading it out and what just rots on the ground. I would love to spend the money on a Klein feeder but they are so expensive it would take me years to get that money back in saved hay. This one looks like kind of a good happy medium.

| Tarter's website says the hay basket is 70lbs. Have your horses been prone to tip it over or nose it around?
I use rubber tubs for hay in my 1-2 horse pastures, but in my 4-5 horse pastures all their bickering over the hay ends up in flipped tubs.
How many horses do you have on each hay basket? I was thinking of getting two for my 4-5 horse pastures. |

| We have three and love them. They do not waste much at all, but we feed a good alfalfa/grass mix and they eat it all up. We recently bought the big bale hay chix nets to put inside because they were going through too much hay. We put four small bales in the net, in the basket and it lasts about 6 days - no waste whatsoever. The horses do not drag them around at all. |
