Hello! Within the next year we would like to relocate from the TriState NY area to NC!(Charlotte,Hickory,Asheville and Matthews area) looking for some feedback on living, barrel racing, people,(gay friendly) and economy! We don't need huge acreage but would like a few horses! Husband is into 1/4 mile race cars and myself obviously barrel horses. Looking for jackpots and nice arenas to barrelrace and to trailride! Thank you

Just from my personal experiences having to travel to Durham 4 times in 10 months for medical treatment....a lot of the locals don't like anyone that is not from their area. We ran across a few that were just horrible to deal with and were not friendly or helpful at all.

Unfortunately I have had to go up to the Brevard/Ashville area several times.  The locals were not friendly, actually they seemed to be willfully uninformed.  I saw several instances of racism and intolerant religious actions.  On top of that the roads suck.

I moved to NC from TX three years ago. We live in the triad (Winston/Greensboro area). We love the location. It’s beautiful, affordable, temperate climate, and tons to do with all the hiking/breweries/wineries around. We live in a bigger town so it is pretty culturally progressive. I board my horse and there are lots of places to choose from in this area and the farms are absolutely gorgeous.

Now for the bad... lol. I agree that some people here, especially horse people, are not very friendly. I have had some people at barrel races be straight up rude to me. There are nice people too, but I would say there are not as many as where I came from. There are less barrel races here than back home and definitely less with added money. I can find maybe 2-3 barrel races per month within a 1.5 hr drive. I have also noticed that here things are run much more leisurely. The start times are very loose and i have been to places where they have exhibitions for several hours past the start time. I was used to pulling up and unloading and running back home so it has been an adjustment. I say this because sometimes I just don’t go because I don’t want to be there all day waiting to run. I will say there are lots of beautiful places to trail ride which is a nice improvement from home! Feel free to message me with any questions!

Welcome! We moved about a year and half ago from long island to eastern NC. Im about an hour from raleigh. Theres usually a race every weekend, depending on how far you want to travel.
Have found some wonderful supportive people both in barrels and in our neighborhood

I lived in the Lake Norman area, just outside of Charlotte, for several years and loved it!  There is a lot of barrel racing in NC and a lot of very nice people.  There are many families who have both barrel racing and stock car racing connections.  You’ll love it!

If you plan on moving to the Asheville area and have horses you better come with deep pockets...just saying. Very expensive and very touristy. Not a very horse friendly area in my opinion. I have lived there my whole life and would move in a heartbeat if my husband and I didn't already own what we have...will probably still move one day though lol

I live about 45 minutes north of Raleigh. We have lots of barrel races - so many associations they overlap, so if you dont care about sticking with one, you can find a race just about every weekend. No, some dont have a lot of money, but there's many options, and associations are starting to fight for members, thus, they are starting to increase the added money. And we are close enough and convenient enough to run in Virginia as well. More jackpot shows that rodeo, it seems, depending on which you prefer.

Charlotte is nice, but pricy. The further west in the state it seems you go the more "hillbilly" you get, and less liberal, other than right in Charlotte. To each their own though.

I will disagree, though, maybe its the region, I'd say 85% of the people at the barrel races I go to are quite friendly.

I'm in Virginia, but I have a horse in training in NC and have been spending some time down there and entering shows.  I've known many of the people's names for years, but had never met on a personal level.  I've found the barrel racing peeps very friendly in NC.  My trainer is pretty far east and I think that's NBHA07?  It's very rural there. I would love to retire to NC!

I know someone that lives in Dunn NC on the east coast just off of I-95 and she is always barrel racing. She moved from Mass and loves it there. Look up Valentine Farm or Leslie Ramsdell on FB

I live is SC and am about 45 minutes from the NC state line.  As mentioned, there are numerous barrel racing associations in NC.  When we went to barrle races in NC everyone was always nice to us.  I do prefer the Ashville area to the Charlotte area simply because of scenery.  As far as car racing I'm not really up on what 1/4 mile race cars is but there's tons of car racing here - NASCAR started in the south with bootleggers.  :)  There's also dirt track racing and drag racing. You mentioned trail riding - goolge Biltmore Estate.  It's a beautiful place to ride. Checkout this site.   http://tryon.coth.com/  It's not barrel racing - but for horse people and people that just like to have a good time this is a great place near Ashville.  My non-horse friends abosolutely love going here.  Not sure when you will relocate, but if you relocate by September they are hosting the FEI World Equesterian Games!!!!!!!  If you ever find your self in the Tryon area, be sure to eat at The Caromi.  Landrum, SC (right inside the SC - NC stateline) has a neat little main street and tack stores (mostly English - but a fun place to visit).    My gay friends enjoy going to Ashville.  The COL there is a little steep.  So I would probably look at locating to a neighboring town.   I wish you the best on your move.  Please don't believe everything you hear or read about the South.  I think if you come with an open mind - you might just find you like it.  :)
