| While I agree with the filly thing because if she gets crippled, shes a broodmare, here recently I have seen an incredible amount of mares for sale as broodmares that have never done a thing in their life. Not everything that CAN breed, SHOULD. I have also seen a lot of horses "standing" at stud that should have been cut a long time ago. Alllll of this being said I generally prefer fillies because I have been known to get along with them better. IMO they tend to have more heart/ emotion about their job and apparently I do too so we can get on the same level XD
Resale value is about the same on both being that you are going to have gelding people, and mare people, and people who don't care as long as it does its job... |

| I have a breeding farm on 7 acres. There is no room for geldings. The few horses I've bought have been broods or fillies. I don't buy anything that I don't think is breeding worthy - with or without winnings. Almost all born with testicles are put up for sale, either still with testicles or having them removed. My DFP colt could not deal with my older stallion so he is residing elsewhere. Just no room for more than one boy here. |

Location: Somewhere around here | Personal choice for myself is a filly. I've been wanting filly for a few years now and when I was able to buy a filly that I loved in 2014 she died. Opps. Now I'm wondering if they're cursed because my husband's filly died 2011. Maybe we're cursed instead lol! |

| I have no preference, although I seem to have ended up with all mares as my riding horses the last 14/15 years. My show ponies I have all three though (mares, stallions, and geldings), and while I have individual horse preferences to work with, it is never gender based though and I've had favorites of varying sexes. Bred equally, I think there's still going to be one I'd be drawn to more based off of personality, or build etc. I'd go off of that before going off of gender. As others have said if well bred and worthy of reproducing you always have that option with a mare if she gets injured, but I wouldn't buy a horse solely with that intent as that isn't always guaranteed either to be successful. |

Location: Northern Ontario | I always had a preference for fillys, but just recently bought a colt and OMG, he is so easy and chill compared to the mares I worked with. I LOVE my mares though, but from personnal expereince, I find them more stubborn, less affectionate(except when in heat), and more confident. I guess it dΓ©pends what you like. I have a mare, but have no intention and my gelding is awesome and super well bred, but he is insured so....dΓ©pends what you like. A good horse is a good horse no matter the gender |

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | I have ZERO use for geldings. (That said, the best saddle horse I've ever had ws a gelding.) But now that I have mares and a stallion, geldings do nothing but cause trouble. My stallion is very kind and gets along with all other horses, no matter the gender. Geldings mess with the mares (Including trying to breed them if given the chance.) and want to harass the stallion if they get the chance. I don't need the headaches geldings cause. |

Location: Texas | I prefer fillies but that's just me. Other people hate having to deal with the possibility of painful heat cycles and attitude. Which works for me because we usually sell the colts and keep the fillies. We kept both of out 2014 babies, one gelding and one filly. They're both awesome. The only downside of the gelding is, if he gets hurt his only other job would to be a pet. |

and that is why we don't have any riding mares. Geldings run with the studs and mares are of course seperate with a pasture in between. I have heard horror stories of geldings killing young foals, just harrassing them. So we have never had a gelding in with the broodmares. |

Geldings are just a pain! Only with the mares for the winter/early spring. But still, once the open mares start coming in heat....... (These are not MINE, but the ones at the ranch. I have no geldings!) And some are evil enough to kill a foal just because they can! (Geldings in general.) |

Location: North Dakota -> Colorado | In this case it is entirely dependent on conformation and personal choice. Personally, I will normally pick the filly but it is to each their own. |
