| I'm going to try to buy a used bob marshall, any tips on looking for one? I know its supposed to say original sports saddle? anything else? how about sizing? I'm usually a 14.5 - 15 martin/courts so would i do a 15.5-16 BM? and what pads do you prefer with them? |

Location: CTX | I went up a size from my Billy Cook. Also, make sure there is no crease in the seat. I only use Saddleright pads with mine with a BOT liner. |

| Ok. What’s the difference in the barrel, trail and wrangler models? Just the horn and cantle? |

Location: Louisiana | I ride in the same size as I do a treed saddle...only size up if you like to move around a lot.
Saddleright pad 100%
Get pictures of all the "guts," the last one I sold (I included pics) had a good bit of frayed nylon that I didn't want to deal with replacing.
I'd hate to buy one and not know about that. |

Location: Jersey Girl | Make sure the rigging is in good shape. Don't buy one with a crease in the seat.
As for seat size, if you like to be locked in get the same size as a treed saddle. If you want more freedom go up one size. |

| I found an older trail model all suede. not "pretty" but its 850, would that be a good deal? The other "newer" models I see are around 1200+
what other pads do you all use? I am not a SR fan. my friend uses csi |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Are you going to buy a Bob Marshall that is the original brand are a Circle Y brand? I would not buy it if the seat has a crease or rip and if theres to much fraying on the riggings and stirrup rigging. A little bit of normal wear fraying is ok but not if its almost frayed in half. I use my 5 Star pad under my Bob Marshall, I use 1/2 or my 3/4 inch just depends on what gelding I'm riding at the time. I went up half a size on my saddle, I ride in a 14.5 inch to a 15 inch seat on my normal saddles, so I got a 15.5 inch seat on the BM, if your horse has a dip behind his/hers withers the saddle will form to your horses back and make the saddle a little tighter fit. The barrel model will have a higher swell and cantle on them, the trail saddle has the shorter swell and cantle. Edit to add: the trail saddle will have a wider pommel/ gullet.

original bob marshall and yes my horse has a dip. I'm probably going for the trail model I don't like to be sucked down/in to a saddle. I like room but not loose if that makes sense lol |

Are you going to be just trail riding are barrel racing in the BM? For tail riding I would go up a size, since I like barrel racing I just went up 1/2 a size, but if I were going to be just trail riding a whole size would be better I think. But me just going up a half size I'm still comfortable trail riding in my BM. |

| I bought a used Bob Marshall years ago that came with a bad crease in the seat. I used it like that for 5+ years and never once had a horse with a sore back but I made sure that I always used a good quality pad. The crucial characteristic the pad must have is that it is 2 pieces so there is less material over their spine than along the sides - of the many pads that I tried, I liked the Equipedic, Saddleright and Corrector the best. The Corrector was fabulous for my cowbred mare that was butt high because I could shim the front and actually sit level. She is also the one who worked 100% better in the BM than in any great-fitting treed saddle that I put on her. I ride a 14" in pretty much every saddle I've ever ridden and that is the size BM I had but like I said, it was well used so the suede was slick and I never bothered to rough it up because I like to be able to move when I need to.

| Is this considered a crease? Itβs only a light one where your leg goes.Β

Yes, that's what everyone means by crease, although the one you pictured isn't bad at all. That amount wouldn't deter me from purchasing.
Some will have a bad one through the actual seat part. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | That crease would not bother me at all thats a pretty normal one, the creases that I have seen and stay away from are the one's that the saddle will fold up, the foam in the seat are broken and will have a deep deep crease in the middle of the seat. The one that your showing is OK. |

Location: Somewhere around here | From my knowledge, Originals are pretty supple and have amazing resale value; but Circle Ys are on the slightly stiffer side and doesn't have near as good resale value. Some people don't care, some people do. Agreed with others, no creases if you can help it. Always put your saddle up where it's supported, not on it's side and especially not with the horn and pommel down on the ground keeping the saddle straight up, that's what will give you creases. |
