| At what level of verifable earnings of an individual horse are you impressed? We all know that $100,000 winner is neat, but are our expectations too high??

If they get lucky once, then it is not as impressive. If they have been good for a measureable amount time it is more impressive to me. |

Location: Illinois | I think it also depends on the caliber of horse. My answer would be different for each division. I have one now that's 3D/4D depending on the size of show and quality of 1D horses I'm running against. I've been running him for 6 years and he's got earnings over $7,000 plus 2 saddles and I think that's really good for that caliber of horse. If he was a 1D horse I'd be disappointed in that in a 6 year time frame. I also only haul to about 10-15 races in a year and rarely go farther than 2 hours from home, so it's just NBHA races, no big league events. So I think he's done great and that $7,000 has covered his initial purchase price, which also affects what I think is impressive. If I'm gonna drop $20,000 on a horse I expect it to win a decent amount for me over my career with it. So I think there's just so many factors and these days you can have a super nice horse and still just luck in and out of the money. |

Good point, I made this with the assumpion of 1D horses. With earnings during the futurity & Derby years. |

Oh please, say you had a pretty palomino mare with about $20k in earnings, would you be pretty darn proud of her?? |

| I have a hard time with the 'verifiable' part. I run strictly NBHA, but only the State Finals and VA Classic are reported winnings. My stallion won about $4500 last year alone, and has never won less than $2500 in a year. He's probably at the $25K lifetime earning level. But only a few checks have ever been reported.
My rocket mare's verifiable earnings are mostly from her futurity year. And even then there were 2 futurities that didn't report where she won some good money. She won me some big checks at my NBHA shows and her lifetime earnings are over $25K. That wasn't enough for a discount for her breeding in 2017 tho so I guess not impressive yet.
I'm impressed with any horse that consistently runs and pulls checks. If you're only impressed with the top horse(s) then you'll be a very unhappy person (or already are). Even, or especially, the top horses only hold that earning level for a short time. |

I tend to agree with you on a lot of that. My gray (Harlans Dash) has won a lot of money at amatuer rodeos and barrel races - I'd guess upwards of $45K but the majority of it has been at rodeos so it's not reported anywhere. I keep track of what they all win, and he got close to $10K in 2012 and in 2017, he won $9166 on 58 total runs. He never was a futurity or derby horse and the only really big race I go to is the Bonus Race Finals so he's never had many chances at those $3K and up checks. He might not be impressive in Equistat, but he's impressive in my opinion, and a lot of other opinions around the Midwest. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | depends on the horse how the horse was compaigned. If he went to every fut down south and some up north and ran some more and won $5k. ehhh If he went/placed in 2 or 3 and won $5000. I am impressed. Futurities are hard They can win a nice one in SD and win less than $5000 against some of the toughest Fut horses going. If the horse is a steady eddie that has gone for a few years here and there. I want to see $20k+ before I am impressed. Location of said horse means a lot too. There are a lot less big money races in the area I am in -WY, SD etc. Now if they are running in AZ, TX, OK. Lots of open races where they can pocket $1200 a day.

Location: Illinois | Yeah mine only has like $500 on equistat, but I keep a spreadsheet of what he's won on my own. If someone were to look him up to potentially buy they'd never buy him. I prefer asking for results so I can see where they're placing & against who. If I was buying one that info would be more beneficial to me than earnings. |

I'm going to have to start this!
I've not kept any sort of track what my old guy has earned. I'm just happy if I win enough to pay my entries to the next race. I don't every truly make money (Consistent 3D horse) so that's good enough for me. He's probably made WAY more than I imagine he's made, but have no idea how much. |

I help advertise a local stallion that is really nice. I run his facebook and website for the owners that aren't into the online thing lol. Anyways, I keep track of every place he runs, his placing and earnings and list them. Because even though equistat may not keep track of all the places he earns money, you can usually google the results. His full brother has equistat futurity, rodeo earnings of around $150,000+ but his official rodeo earnings are $250k. |

I just went and paid my $5 for MY report. I've got 9 results, starting in 2004. I bought the horse in 1998.
While I'm impressed I actually have a report, it's not even close to what I've earned on him because, obviously, 99% of the places we go don't report!
So while I'd be impressed with a horse that's won quite a bit...it's not really important to me in the overall scheme of things, because SO many horses are better than a report shows. |

I agree, but from a buyer/seller/breeder standpoint, proof is everything. |

| Is it a broodmare, a prospect gelding, a prospect mare, a futurity horse, a derby horse, or an open horse?
My answer is going to be different for any of the above.
Gotta take into consdieration:
Who was training it.
How often did it run...track or barrels.
How was it managed in it's career....vet, owners, rehab, etc
Bloodlines- if it is an own son of corona cartel and only made 5k on the track and you wanna make it a prospect thats fine but if you want it as a stud to stand to the public thats just not gonna cut it
Examples:
A broodmare that had horses that have produced this, the broodmare herself ran out that much on the track, or your pulling embryos/ breeding a mare that has won that much in barrels.
Are you buying something running that has won that much themselves? If so and it's an OTT prospect I'd be very careful who I bought from if the horse ran out more than 50k on any track and your wanting to make a prospect out of it. It was an okay race horse and your going to have to pay decent money for it unless it was hurt or something happened with an owner. We are talking about like a prospect here. Now don't get me wrong some ppl see an athlete and will walk straight up to an owner or trainer and lay down 10k for a sound vetted prospect but thats a very limited group of ppl savy enough to do that.
If it was a barrel horse that has earned anywhere from 10k and upwards in futurity money that's a decent lil horse that is going to get better if handled correctly.
Very few ppl get the freaks that run out over 100k in their futurity years and even fewer get those that are able to almost reach the 100k mark without ever winning a slot race heading into the end of their 5 yr old derby yr.
So when talking about individual earnings you need to take into consideration why your impressed. Are you broodmare shopping, prospect, derby, or open/rodeo horse?
