| I've always branded what I plan to keep, but I've had this on my mind and wanted to get your input.
If you sell as weanlings/yearlings, do you freeze brand? What are your thoughts on marketability for a branded prospect? Does it make a difference at all?
I appreciate the feedback- I've got one heck of a prospect due any day and will be proud to list this one.
This post is not meant to spark debate on branding OR age at branding-- just if it impacts marketability and sale price. Thanks! |

| The people that I bought my filly from didn't brand her. Something about brand inspectors being a pain in the rear when most of hers sold out of state anyways. Most of the states around her weren't brand inspection states either.
I don't think it would have made much difference in price. While it might have been a decent selling/marketing point, I don't think that's what they were truly after. The horse was named prior to leaving with their ranch initials, so maybe that's why they didn't brand too. All of their foals are named prior to leaving. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Always. I am very proud of what we raise. We freeze brand and it has never made a difference selling them if they are branded or not. But ours is a tasteful brand. If you have a walking billboard that people can see the brand 3 miles away, that is a bit much though.

Yes! Free advertisement if they get into the right hands. |

Yes! Free advertisement if they get into the right hands. What if they get in the wrong hands? Pretty sure you know that 1 + 1 = 3 Por Supuesto, but you can get some "trainers" that make your horse look like a total puke. All the other riders see is that fancy brand on the left hip. I think it can be a double edged sword. Just be careful who sell to, and cross your fingers they stay there.

| We haven't branded ours. And I'm beginning to regret it because we've had several make 1D barrel horses or excel in other rodeo events and I would love to have some way of showing they came from us. I understand there is always the fear that there will be a horse get in the wrong hands and be negative publicity, but I would be willing to risk that if I could go back and brand them all just to have a brand on the winners. |

This is why you have to be selective who you sell to. |

Ya use a smaller brand when breeding weanlings or yearlings. |

Same...we have sold a couple that hubby trained and wishes we would've gotten our brand on before they left.
Then you have the ones you sell, wish you branded...then glad you didn't when new owner all but ruins them... |

Location: Where the buffalo roam | My gelding was branded when I got him as a long yearling with a really cool brand and comes from a reputable barrel horse breeder. I now notice when I see that brand on other horses and I also notice other breeder/trainer brands that are well known. I think it is a great marketing tool. There will always be those horses that do not do well due to bad training or whatever, but I would bet in the long run the majority of horses from a good ranch/breeder/trainer are going to negate those bad ones. If I were in the business I would definitely brand - no different than any of us buying a particular brand name of tack or supplement. Our horses may be a part of our family, but they are still a commodity that makes a living for that breeder.
