I did it. My horse is getting older and his withers are getting more shark like. No regrets.

I did it!!  I have 5 stars.  I've done it to 2 of them.    My gelding has huge withers and even with venting, sometimes the pad would settle back on to the withers and make him sore.  After cutting it, it didn't really change anything except his soreness because there wasn't anything left to make him sore!

I did this before they invented the wither cut out pads from 5 star.

Diamond Wool makes a couple exclusively for Caldwell that have 10" and 13" cutbacks with the wither straps being adjustable with velcro that work fantastic!
Cutting one or having a saddle shop modify one would probably work too but typically the cutbacks are not deep enough for long withers and without the strap, the pressure will get moved to the base of the cutout.

I got one a diamond one with the wither strap. Sold it. It was a lot coarser than the 5 star.
