1. What do you use the nebulizer for? allergies/COPD

2. What medications do you use? No meds, just colloidal silver.

3. How often are you nebulizing? During heat of summer, 3-4 days per week, if not more.

4. Where do you get the perscription medications from? If needed, Valley Vet is most reasonable.

5. Which nebulizer unit are you using? Silver Horse Care, IF I had a bleeder, I would go with a larger compressor like Equi-Resp.

If you are nebulizing for a certain disease (IAD for example) what other treatments are you using and how often? oral, injectable etc. I also have her on Hydroxyzine daily, which is an antihistamine and it works. I also keep Ventpulmin with me at all times, if needed.

I will add my mare is not severe...anymore...we went through a bad patch. Once I figured out how to manage it. Good to go. She only gets hay in the winter...spring, summer; cubes or pellets only. It limits the dust. I have also used Vicks Vapo Rub and nose spray on her. Works well.

Thank you so much for your answers! I have another question: Hydroxazine-is it liquid or powder-vet, compounding pharmacy, online??  Do you think the hydroxazine is the main reason for her being better?

The hydroxyzine is Rx but you can get it several places online with a script. I pay $120 for 1000 ct pills and I am giving 8-9, 2x per day. I just throw the pills in with her grain...but you could crush them if needed. Yes, I really think it's made a difference.

I forgot to mention I also use this, per vet's recommendation. It's not Rx.

I tried a lot of other supplements. She will not eat ANYTHING powdered or I would've stuck with Cur-Ost, but I am not going to pay that much $$ for her to waste it. And I tried everything to get her to eat it.

Thanks again, for some reason this spring my IAD gelding has really flared up (has been diagnosed for 4-6? yrs) but I have been maintaining with uckele LUNG which is spirulina (I too have tried curost, trihist-there's so many) anyway, I had a triamcinolone/prednisolone injection 2 1/2 weeks ago, with albuterol orally 2-3x per day.  I have a homemade nebulizer and give albuterol treatments (eucalyptus oil) when things get really distressed. I have also used zyrtec orally once a day and that probably made the most difference.  Anyway, last night he was really distressed again-so today-I'm searching hard for some answers-treating with antihistimines in horses seems to be limited to skin allergies/hives and airway disease isn't really dealt with in any different route than ventipulmin and steroids-which seems pretty old school considering all the leaps and bounds made in human meadicine in regards to asthma......Did you have your horse scoped?  I'm a little concerned about guttural pouch infection as he has the classic stiff neck BUT, have never had one diagnosed with that before so I might be way off base. Edited to add that I feed flax regularly and have also added hemp seed oil for the "other" omega fatty acids.

It would concern me that he's having so much trouble this early in the year?

Yes, I had my mare scoped and the whole 10 yards at first onset because she had side thumping heaves and it was scary. She did have a slight infection, which we treated then moved to steroids for a short time. Then, I started playing the "what's my maintenance program" game.

If he hasn't ever been scoped, I almost think that'd be where I'd start. Because IF there is an infection of some sort, steroids will only make it worse and it'll just keep lingering and cause more damage.

My mare never had any outward allergy signs, like hair loss, hives, itching etc...but the antihistamine still made a difference for her.

Most vets will agree that if your horse is having problems at rest with rapid respiratory rate you no longer are just dealing with IAD. It has progressed to RAO aka... heaves. Now it gets serious about management. IAD can be pretty silent so I don't think people take it seriously about finding the cause of the allergies until the horse has episodes of actual respiratory distress ... Which is scary and painful to witness. I have two horses within respiratory issues. One with severe heaves. He lived on dexamethasone for almost a year while I tried everything to manage it. It was literally the thing keeping him comfortable enough to stay alive or I would have to put him down. I did everything... From watering hay for a few years to steaming hay for a couple more years, to using antihistamines which don't do anything if given and the allergy has been exposed and finally to nebulizing albuterol and oral ventipulmon..... The only thing that put him in remission (because you obviously can't cure it) is taking him off of hay completely. I've said in previous posts it's what saved his life. He is 25 this year and he has not coughed or had an episode of distress in the past year since being off of hay. NO MORE DEX too! He's a new horse! He gets a soaked alfalfa cubes. If I would have known it would have gotten to this point I would have took him off of hay sooner to prevent the damage done that caused him to be as bad as he is. I don't think people realize but every time your horse has an episode of coughing or distress caused by the inflammatory response from the allergy, irreversible damage can occur. Like scaring which leads to loss of lung function. Each episode causes negative effects. It's only a matter of time before it gets bad. Respiratory disease is a progressive disease. Getting to the root of what the allergy is will slow it down. My other gelding is 9 and was diagnosed with IAD when he was 4. I've tried everything with him too. I finally sent him to a respiratory specialist for a complete work up to test lung function ect to see if my management was working. So far so good. He is off of hay and gets soaked alfalfa cubes too. As much as I'd rather have them on hay for convenience I just can't. With my younger horse I hope to greatly slow the rate of his disease by being so aggressive in my management early. I do run him so I have a flexineb I use. I nebulize ipratropium bromide before I run. It lasts 3 times as long as albuterol. I also nebulize budesonide as a steroid after the ipratropium. But most important of all the things I do... Is keep him off of hay. My advice is to get another BAL and scope done right now then go from there. You need to know what inflammatory cells are present to know how to treat his respiratory disease this time of the year while your horse is having trouble. You will also be able to see of it has progressed into more advanced stages.... Or if this is an infectious issue going on. I hope you figure it out. EDITED trying to get this to put my post into separate paragraphs but it just keeps lumping it all up.

3.  How often are you nebulizing?

4.  Where do you get the perscription medications from?

5.  Which nebulizer unit are you using?

If you are nebulizing for a certain disease (IAD for example) what other treatments are you using and how often?  oral, injectable etc

1. What do you use the nebulizer for? I recently moved to the panhandle from east texas and my mare has been coughing when I warm her up. She isn't adjusting well to the dust storms. It completely cleared her airways and shes actually firing a lot harder.

2. What medications do you use? Chellated Silver is all I have used so far.

3. How often are you nebulizing? 2 days a week and before runs.

4. Where do you get the perscription medications from? I've only purchased Ventipulmin but literally just called my vet and she had it waiting for me at the front office.

5. Which nebulizer unit are you using? Silver horse care down and dirty with chellated silver.

Yes she did. And will if I don't stay on top of giving her the breathing treatments. Had her scoped and she was super inflammed but no bleeding or anything after a run. Vet said allergies.
