We’ve seen the first few flies popping out this week so it’s got me thinking... is it safe for me to spray my horses with fly spray (I’m 6 months pregnant)? We typically use Pyrhanna. I’ve also considered Fly predators but the cost for us would be $385 for the year and that seems pretty high.

What did you all do about fly prevention when you were pregnant?

I use the ShooFly Leggins and don't ever have to spray my horses at all, never any flies. They have fly sheets on though. The other horses at my barn will get covered in flies though, but they don't use anything on them. The leggins really are worth their weight in gold, plus some! Maybe an idea for you to avoid needing spray at all and you don't have to mess with them.

I never thought about the fly spray being an issue when pregnant - I just made sure to wash my hands like usual after I sprayed them down.

Pyranah makes an all natural fly spray, works pretty good, if your concerned about chemicals and your skin.

Pstch. I would spray weeds with roundUp when I was 8 months pregnant with my first. I wore gloves, and long pants, and didn’t do it on a windy day.

I wouldn’t think twice about spraying my horses down with fly spray.

LOL there’s just so much info out there about avoiding chemicals. It’s scary! You’re right though I’m sure it’s probably fine.

This is a good idea it just gets so humid here that I’d be afraid they’d sweat more under the fly protection.

I'm in IL and it gets humid. Last year when it got in the 90s they didn't sweat anymore than the naked horses did.

My midwife told me that information changes every year and not to get caught up in what I can or can't do. Doctors use and expose you and baby to many more chemicals each visit than most people use all day.

She said continue life as usual. As long as someone wasn't getting drunk or high their normal every day activities were perfectly suited to raise a child to term.

Keep calm, carry on.
