Can someone explain the reasoning behind that dinky short pattern in a huge arena? And why on earth can a rodeo of this stature not have decent ground indoors. I venture to guess if it wasn't for big money girls would not run there. That is a disgrace. That was down right scary watching.

I have no idea about the pattern. I would assume the shorter the pattern, the quicker the barrel racing is complete.

Houston, Calgary, Salt Lake, Pikes Peak are all rodeos that govern themselves, do pretty much invite only and make their own rules. Why do they have a short pattern at Houston? Because they can. Why is the ground bad? Because they can. Let’s face it...most of the people in the stands are there for the concert after the rodeo. That’s where the money comes from. JMHO but the only reason they even still have a rodeo there is simply for the long standing tradition it has.

My voice about the dirt is because of the concert. It gets super packed down from all of those people walking on it. Maybe eventually they'll try fixing a few things up. As long as they pay like they do, people will be happy to go.

If the barrel pattern was further down the pen, the third barrel would be in the tracks left by the stage when it rolls out. It's hard now but where that stage rolls through is like concrete.

I wish at these large event rodeos like this they'd have a performer singing or play etc entertaining ppl and drag for barrels at these big rodeos. 2-3 tractor drivers and knockout a drag quick.. I feel like with the amount of money involved they could get that done.....can someone not sweet talk these board members or influence them somehow. Like George singing for 15-20 mins just for one drag....no ones gonna complain...help the horses out George and give us 20 mins lol

They bury a huge electrical box in the ground halfway down the arena towards the right side for the concert stage... at least that's what they did when I ran there. I assume they are concerned what could happen if a barrel horse goes off pattern. The doggers & ropers run from the opposite end so they are on the other side of the arena from where the box is buried. They used to put up a netting fence behind the 3rd barrel as a barrier which happened to be the same pattern & color of the barrels. A lot of horses would blow by the 3rd (thankfully, not mine) because they couldn't see it against the fence. You were allowed to practice the pattern but without the fence up. The committee asked our opinions on how to improve so I suggested to not match the fence & barrel colors/patterns or stop using the fence. They finally stopped using the fence. The stage tracks & people packing the ground is not the issue. The concert happens after the rodeo so the ground could be worked up before the rodeo.

Assuming here but, probably for the same reason the Corpus Christi rodeo doesn’t advertise the tripping- they don’t want to attract the animal rights activists. VERY few people know about the tripping event here and it’s because they DO NOT want it known to the public. Don’t blame the rodeo committee a bit.

The final day is a shootout where the winners from Cheyenne, Houston, Reno, Austin, San Angelo, Ft Worth, and 2 others I’m not remembering at the moment, in the 3 roughstock events, barrels and steer wrestling have a long go and then top 4 come back in a shootout round for a chance to win $25,000 for 1st, $10,000 for 2nd,$5,000 for 3rd and $3,500 for 4th. The rodeo who’s team wins the most money also split $12,500.

They don't let very many people on the dirt for the concert. Only a small area is roped off.
