Any vets on here? Or people that are in pre vet/vet school? Is it realistic to keep my two horses, and be able to ride them. I don’t want to sell. It would break my heart! But I need to hear other people experience...

If you have a place to keep the horses, I would keep them. If it is going to cost an arm and a leg to keep them then it may not be feasible.

Casualdust just graduated vet school, she kept hers.  She did not ride  or go to as many races as she used to but I heard her say many times her horses were a much needed break from studying.

My parents told me they would allow me to keep them at their place for as long as I need. So luckily I wouldn’t have to worry about that!

I say keep them your going to need them for some me time, and since your going to be keeping them at your parents then that is a big ole plus for you, all the ones that I knew that went to vet school always had their horses to relax with but didnt go much any where just a race here or there to decompress and hang out with friends when the time for a break came.

I kept mine through school. They were a good mental break. However I had somewhere to keep mine. You won't have time to have a "job" through vet school. Maybe during the summer but not during class unless you have 1-2 hours at the university. Most of your time will be spent studying. If you have them someplace you pay board, this may be more difficult.

I sold mine. Just had no time to ride, I could have kept them at my mom's but that was 8 hours away from the vet school and I wanted them to go get used instead of languishing in pasture for 4 years. Plus, I needed the $. In hindsight, I do wish I had kept one. He would have been happy to sit in a pasture for 4 years LOL and then I would have had something finished when I graduated.
If you have somewhere to keep yours then that will make it much easier if you're not paying board!

Not a vet/pre-vet but I am in college and working full time so I am very busy. I opted to keep mine. I only have 3: my very first horse --now retired, my nice barrel horse (I consider her my 'Soul Horse') and up until recently a filly that I raised. I have no time to ride during the semester except occasionally on the weekends. But, with that being said, I couldn't bear to part with either of the first 2, and I recently traded the filly for a gelding who is a little older and further along so he does not need the same kind of time dedication as a 3yo.
The little time that I do get to spend with them during the semester does wonders for my mental health because I am constantly stressed to the max. So my opinion is, as long as you can afford to keep them, do.

I have done both through different stages of life.

I had 1 horse while I was in college and kept him at my parents. I never rode, and he was a pasture ornament until he passed away.
On the flip side I sold everything as a young adult when I was first starting up in my career.

Honestly selling was MUCH BETTER. I was able to start fresh when I was ready. Plus I didnt have to worry about the stress of horse care/maintenance/costs.
