Location: IL | I am having a hard time anticipating the 2nd barrel and I'm rating then turning my horse too soon around the barrel. It's slowing us down, she is not keeping her hip up in the turn. Any exercises or ideas to help me with this? I just can't seem to get past this. |

| Pick a spot past the barrel and ride all the way to it. I have to really make myself look at the fence and not the barrel. I started out on finished horses that no matter what I did they did their job. While it was quite fun and made me feel like I could ride, my young ones tell a different story. I am having to really learn to ride and think now. |

| I have to mentally tell myself to ride all the way and get her hip past it. Like literally talk to myself. I also found that it's easier for me to do this if I stay 2 handed further.
At the WCBRA finals last year, I got some advice that really stuck with me from a girl who is a heck of a jockey and hard to beat. I asked her how long she thought a person should stay 2 handed between the barrels because I felt like I was going to the horn too soon. She basically reiterated to me that your outside rein supports your horses hip, and her exact words were "you stay 2 handed until you feel like you're going to fall the f*ck off, then go to your horn". And I can definitely tell you that staying 2 handed longer has made me ride further, and has really helped me keep my horses hip engaged for the turn. |

I love this! I will try that! |

| Change your barrel pattern ...
JUST RUN THE PATTERN IN REVERSE ...
RUN TO >>>>
3RD BARREL LEFT SIDE
1ST BARREL LEFT SIDE
2ND BARREL RIGHT SIDE
AND THEN HOP ACROSS THE FINISH LINE..

Location: west of East Texas | I do this when I get over confident. My daughter does this sometimes. I started reprogramming my way of thinking. I have to 'think' my goal is to overrun it and not worry about blowing past it. I had to convince myself that the 'extra' time I took going past it was cheaper than having to pull up and fight to get off it or knocking it over. This has been working really well... until my last run. I was so smooth and was feeling so cocky that I went one-handed all the way across the pen. I hit it going into it and my horse was so low that the barrel left it's mark ABOVE my knee. Seriously... I was that far into the turn at that point???? What was I thinking???? Back to trying for the fence again... And I know it's not my horse, she saves me many times from my own bad moves. |

| If you believe your eyes .. the following tips can be found by watching
youtube videos of the top rodeo 4D riders in the USA.
CERVI is the master of running and holding her horses off the barrels
by releasing the inside rein as the que to make the turn and then
by using small bumps on the inside rein to complete the turn with
horses feet up under themselves.
Use two reins and NOT your short loopydeloop barrel reins
learn to shorten either rein single handed with your fingers .....
and to reach up and shorten your inside rein leaving soft slack in
the outside rein. Once you learn to have two rein hands go back
to using a barrel rein that is NOT TOO SHORT!! Barrel rein should
be long enough to touch your belly button while you are sitting up
straight with horse standing still.
HOME TRAINING ...
DO NOT TEACH A BARREL HORSE TO ROLLBACK.
DO NOT TEACH A HORSE TO MAKE ANY TURNS RUNNING TOWARDS A FENCE.
INSTEAD .. TEACH YOUR HORSE TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD WITH FEET
UNDER THEM BY WALKING, THEN TROTTING AND THEN LOPING FROM
A LARGE CIRCLE TO A SMALL CIRCLE AND THEN UNWINDING THE CIRCLE
BACK TO NORMAL SIZE. This trains them not to pivot on their rear feet
as they would do in a rollback ..
Watch this basic sales videos for 2yo horses ... the dummy and rope
is not only training but a fun break for both horse and rider ... even
tho you notice a girl trainer is doing the roping ...
https://youtu.be/XUIAxMugyEQ
HELP YOUR HORSE to become a natural flying lead changer by working
figure eights until your lead changes are almost invisible.
Do side passes and two tracking exercises all while using one rein to
move either left or right ...
Changing to riding two handed between barrels accomplishes three things ..
1.) Squares up riders shoulders and balance which is a que to the horse to
get ready to rate and change leads if necessary as a natural movement.
2.) Gives the rider the time/chance to reach up and shorten the inside rein
while lifting it up to keep horse off the barrel until rein is released.
AND to grab the horn with the free hand ..
{If a horse has been taught to rollback or turn moving towards a fence ... this is going
to be on their mind when at speed and will anticipate and pivot into the
barrel thinking they are being trained to move away from the fence}
3.) By shortening the inside rein with upward neck pressure it keeps the rider from
trying to neck rein and having the outside rein tighter than the inside rein
which will tilt their nose to the outside and throw their rear feet/hips out
of alignment to follow their front end and their nose to make a turn.
You can practice this on a pasture road by moving horse to left or right
by using a single rein ... left rein to move to right ... right rein to move to left ..
Keep in mind these moves are even made on the first barrel to setup the 1 1/4 turn
lining up the horse to the barrel and then making your normal turn movements.
3rd BARREL .. Rider allows horse to swing wide on 3rd barrel instead of keeping
tight turn on the running home side of the barrel... this costs you 0.20 seconds
for every 2 1/2 additional steps you have to make in order to start your gather
to run home ..
You are familiar with this super run .. so watch the change to two handed and
the shortening and lifting of the inside rein with soft slack in the outside rein ..
Until you and horse becomes very smooth doing the standard moves in the
sales video ... you and horse will not be on the same page when you make
your run for speed and to shut the clock off.
https://youtu.be/bwjlqkRdA5U
Your moves during smooth practice sessions should be the same ques
you will be able to make automatically with muscle memory instead of your
brain trying to communicate with your muscles ...
that costs you a tipped barrel.. lol
HAVE FUN ... DON'T NAG YOUR HORSE .. JUST KEEP THOSE FEET MOVING !!
