Like all antibiotics, Levofloxacin has a long list of possible side effects, but one notorious dreaded side effect of levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin (both in class called “floroquinolones”) is tendinitis or tendon rupture. I don’t think anyone knows for sure why that happens, and it’s actually rare. The most common tendon to rupture is the Achilles’ tendon, which really sucks, obviously. Because it’s such a dramatic event, it has gotten a lot of attention. Older people on steroids are at increased risk of tendon rupture. The more troubling, more common side effects are headache, dizziness, and neuropathy. I used to use them a lot more than I do now, because of these side effects.
