Location: Somewhere around here		Ok so I'm not new to bits and mechanics, but I am new to Mullen bits. I know Mullen mouthpieces help a horse become a little stiffer but I I'm having a hard time thinking about what a horse would do with a Connie Combs stabilizer type of bit vs a Mullen mouthpiece with a few inches of gag? I know gag gives a warning but would a horse still stay a little stiffer?

Yes hence the name "stabilizer" BUT it is slightly more forgiving bc of the gag. IMO you should always have a mullen with a little gag to it. Horse's can easily "take" these bits and run off with you if they aren't very soft in the mouth. Mullen are not my fav bit at all...I guess I teach my horses to be a lil stiff so I'm a chain mouth kinda person. Danyelle Campbell has a good lil video on trainingbarrelhorses.com where she talks about mullen mouth pieces and why she likes them for certain horses.

Location: Oklahoma		I have been trying a few different bits on my 13 yr old since i just couldnt seem to find what we were needing during our run. A friend suggested a mullen and it made a huge difference. He has become more confident and smoother. I dont ride him in it all the time just during runs. Paul Petska made me a mullen with copper wrapped mouth and really like the feel of this bit. I couldnt "get ahold" of him as much which allows him to turn on his own. I also have a connie combs that i like on him. Sometimes in a run, less is more and in my case it has really helped.

Location: Somewhere around here		Well from trying almost all the different kind of mouthpieces on Earth on my horse, hands down he works best in a Mullen piece with the barrel pattern. He has a tendency to want to be too noodley and that Mullen helps him stay a lot more connected to himself. But I hate how it feels in my hands and I feel like I need constant contact with him around the barrels. So I haven't been riding him in it unless we're at a race but I'm thinking about buying one with a little gag.
