Location: Arizona | My mare has not been performing at all during our run. I haven't done time onlies in about a year or so. She's only been on the pattern for about 2 years. I can't seem to get her to "run fast" in the race. Yesterday instead of entering a race I decided to go back to doing some practice runs. Good grief, my mare was very aggressive, very fast, and ran perfectly 3 times, no issues during these practice runs. What the heck?? I didn't change up anything. She just gets crazy during practice runs. I don't understand how she knows the difference. How do I get her to run like that for a race??? So frustrating. Any ideas??????? |

For clarification, you made 3 real RUNS on her in a row? Or are you talking about 3 separate occasions of doing a time only?
If you ran 3 times in a row .... obviously you shouldn't do that.
If it was 3 occasions where she does the time only just fine, then I would wonder how YOU are the rider are accidentally cueing her differently during a run. Do you get nervous? Anxious? Do you do anything different for a time only, regarding your warm up, than you do for a run? |

Sorry, we made (3) practice runs yesterday. They were spaced far enough in between to let her rest. We haven't practiced "running" back to back in a very long time. I wanted to make sure she "got it"...lol.
I am not nervous at our run, sure, things are going through my mind but gosh when she takes off, she acts like she has never seen a barrel in her life, completely different horse. I am going to have a video of our practice runs on Thursday, I will add it to this post with her "race" run. |

what are YOU doing differently?
Yep. The horse doesn't know the difference, so it's something you're subconsciously doing without realizing it. |

I don't feel like I am doing anything different...seriously. I had the same tack on,stood in the same holding pen, didn't ask her to do anything different than what I did the day before. Hmm. But yet, it's not really the fact that her practice run was way better than her race run, it was her energy and her aggression...where the heck is that coming from in a "practice" run. Strange. You would think she would be lazy in practice and nervous as all heck in a race. |

Why do you think she'd be lazy in practice and nervous in a race? Aside from YOU knowing the difference, is there something specific that the HORSE knows is different? |

Location: Montana | I agree with the other posters...what are you doing different between a time only and a run? A horse can feel even the slightest change in us. A few years ago I had to change the way I got ready for an actual run...because we would have minor gate issues and things were just not comfortable. I was told to act like I was drinking a beer in Hawaii, LOL. So I warmed up (and still do) away from everyone else, stayed off until the drag or so before my run (if I was first up, I'd get on the previous drag), and I stayed away and still mostly try to stay away from the warm up pen...too much craziness and my horse would get way hotter if I spend more time in the warm up pen than just before the drag. Now my horse is excited and ready to go in the arena, as am I, and we are consistent and make decent runs. And each horse is different, some horses need a lot of hype and energy to be ready to make a run, others need laid back and calm rider and atmosphere so they can do their best. |

| Your body and brain are the only ones that know the difference between time onlies and the real thing. Unconsciously, you are doing something to tell her the difference. I do the same thing. I have to really concentrate on myself more than my horse before I make a real run. |
