My week has been beyond hectic. I *think* I remember seeing a small hard bump on the underneath side of her belly, kinda back where the back cinch is. I didn’t worry or wonder, just figured it was from a horse fly bite. The biting black flies have been horrible this year in this area, and I never see horse flies and I’m seeing them more frequent this year. Fast forward from Saturday and I notice a swollen area on the underside of her belly yesterday evening. She flinched when I touched it. At the center of it was a small amount of congealed blood. The area swollen is about 8-10” in diameter and about 1” thick. It’s not pitting edema. Last night when I was messing with it, I didn’t think pigeon fever. I always thought that was in the pectoral muscles. When I was messing with it and trying to “squeeze” stuff out of it, nothing was really coming out. She was super super tender when I touched the center of it where the actual wound is. Now I’m paranoid it’s pigeon fever as apparently the abscesses can occur in the belly area too. I’m calling the vet and going to get it cultured. In the meantime, What did y’all do to treat the soil?

Could it be a wasp/bee sting?  or...  maybe the fly bite got infected?

Just trying to think of other things than Pigeon Fever.  Hopefully, the culture will come back negative for that.  As far as treating the soil, I'm no help.

We battled that in my husband's heel horse but it was in his chest.  It was no fun to get healed but wouldn't have wanted to try it without a vet's help.  It involved cutting the wound open and putting a guaze strip inside with the end hanging out so the fluid could drip out at will.  Yucky !!!

He had been at the Team Roping Finals in Oklahoma City.  Pretty sure he picked it up there.

I would say it's the wrong time of year, but who knows for sure.

I had one year where 4 out of 5 horses got it. I have no idea where it came from and the 5th horse never got it even though he was in the same pasture as the rest of them. Never had it since.

One of those started under the stomach like that. In what is the normal place to get the scabby fly bites.

What is it?

Didn’t find any larvae, mesquite thorns, ticks, or debris of any kind. Wound isn’t tunneling so he thinks it’s a reaction to an insect bite.

We have a big Thoroughbred that gets something similar now and then.  It's like a droopy bag of fluid between his legs or under his tummy.   We don't do anything and it just goes away.
