Location: Bandera, TX | I’m going on vacation to the north-eastern side of Idaho in July – general Rexburg area…. Dubois, ID to be precise. It’s my second time there doing a horse drive at www.silverspurranchidaho.com I will be flying into Salt Lake and then renting a car to drive there. I’m looking for something to do that is somewhat on the way… Two questions: - Is the Cauldron Linn worth visiting
- Rather than taking IH 86 up there, I saw highway 93/26 through the Craters of the Moon Monument. It is a longer drive, but might be more scenic? Is it pretty?
Any other ideas? I won’t have time for the western part of the state. Thank you!!!

| We stopped at Craters of the Moon during the month of June once and it was HOT. It was a really neat experience (awesome terrain), but most of what I remember is how darned hot it was. The black rock really traps the heat and it gets sweltering.
As for Cauldron Linn, Star Falls is absolutely beautiful, and you may see some people kayaking in the rapids below.

| Craters of the moon is not very scenic, unless you like to look at vast fields of lava rock. I'd take the shorter route. Go to Bear World! |

| The videos on that website are entertaining. Why are they all wearing Kenney Chesney hats? |

Thank you! I'm coming up from South Texas.... heat is good. Last time I went to Idaho in July I almost froze to death. It was sleeting and I was obviously not prepared for that. I though I would freeze to death sleeping in a tent in the middle of nowhere..... |

So you will definitely enjoy Craters of the Moon, if only for the heat! Like Whiteboy said, there isn't much there, but it's a vast lava field with caves and tunnels that are pretty neat to tromp through. |

This makes me chuckle only because those of us that live in Northern Idaho call the area you are headed to SE Idaho. Sounds like a great trip and have fun! |

Location: Bandera, TX | LOL - That's because you have that panhandle!!! Right..?!
See, I live in "South Central" Texas - I understand the specifics.... LOL. I wish I could spend more time in Idaho. It is such a beautiful state. So many things are on my bucket list there. |

I was thinking the same thing! NE Idaho would be Bonners Ferry, Moyie Springs... unless the OP was coming up from south of Idaho, which she is
If you ever get up to the Panhandle and like to ride mountain bikes, the Hiawatha Trail in NW MT/NE ID is a blast and pretty darn easy- you ride along an old railroad bed, through tunnels and across bridges. There's a lot of really neat history in the area, Wallace and Kellogg are fun to explore as well. |

| I'll be the voice of dissent on Bear World lol. I've been, it was fine, but very 'zoo like' if that makes sense. Enclosures that you drive through and just wasn't my cup of tea. For the money and as close as you'll be already, spend a couple days in Yellowstone instead. Rexburg is only an hour and a half from Yellowstone anyways and even spending a day in the park would be worth it vs going to Bear World, imo.
If you're thinking about going to Cauldron Linn you'd be adding a good 3 hours of drive time in the wrong direction by the time you drive almost to Twin Falls and then back to the 84/86 junction. I like Cauldron Linn but I'm (originally) local to the area and I don't know if I'd say it's worth the 3 extra hours to drive there. If you do decide to drive that direction, go check out Shoshone Falls and the Perrine Bridge/Snake River Canyon too. It's only another 20 minutes and would make the drive more worth it. There's a walking path along the canyon rim and if you're lucky and the weather is good (not too windy!) you can watch base jumpers jumping off the bridge and then parachuting down. It freaks me out every time but my husband and the kids could watch them for hours! If you stay for lunch/dinner and pizza's your thing, it's worth checking out Gerties Brick Oven Pizza. All you can eat pizza in about a million different flavors, everything from traditional to sauerkraut to dessert pizza! Yummy! It's my very favorite place to eat in Twin! (my pregnancy cravings have nothing to do with that! probably...) |

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately I do not have any more time for side excursions. There is so much in Idaho that I would love to do. I’d love to go to Yellowstone too, but the crazy mount of people there scare me. I try to get very far away from people. I just can’t… may be sometime I will get brave enough to do the park in the winter. |
