My 14 year old barrel mare warms up and while warming up, she ALWAYS sneezes. I mean at least 10 times if not more while warming up. I didn't really think anything of it until a friend mentioned that sneezing could be a sign of a light bleeder. She runs fine, fires pretty well. Comes out of the arena, no coughing at all. Sneezes rarely after a run, maybe once or so. But to be honest I've not paid to much attention. Because I thought it was just her.

Anyone else have experience with this? I am willing to get her scoped for sure. I just wanted to know if anyone else had anything similar to warrant scoping.

Thanks!

I’ve never heard of it being a sign of a bleeder. My horses have been clearing their airways out quite a bit lately but it’s been hot, dry, and dusty. Has your weather changed? My vet recommended an OTC product called β€œ cough ease” comes in an orange labeled bottle. It’s only 20.00 a bottle and it lasts me couple months. Is is extremely effective in opening up an airway and increasing lung function. Just love it.

My mare used to do this as well. She was never sick, never had an allergy problem, etc. As soon as I would get on her she would start sneezing over and over again. I thought that it was just the way she was. A month or so later she started losing a lot of weight and her coat became wiry and dull. I treated her for ulcers and she bloomed! She put on so much weight and had a beautiful shiney coat. Funnily enough the sneezing also stopped.

I guess it was like some sort of nervous tic that would start up when I would ride. She didn’t really have any other symptoms of ulcers until she started drastically losing weight. Ulcers can cause them to do some really weird things.

Never heard of it being a sign. I would rather think it's dusty and she's clearing her nasal passages.

Before I left for college, I worked on racetracks and was an embryo transfer tech for a lot of the big name/high cotton race and eventing farms. Bleeders were common from routine flushing to sales prep, but I never witnessed or heard anyone make mention about an association between sneezing and bleeding.  I don't think it's a known symptom of PH.

Anyhow, I've recently heard of a lot of pro girls using the Equi-Resp. It's essentially a nebulizer and is supposed to be pretty awesome at dealing with allergies and other irritants affecting the resp. tract.  I know Kellie Collier uses it when she feels a need...

What I would think is going on is just particulate irritation which could cause a nosebleed if prolonged or exacerbated. Maybe this is why your friend felt this was a Sx of actual PH type bleeding?
