Location: somewhere in the south | Ok, so here's the deal............I bought a mare last fall and have been riding her off and on and doing pretty good then all of a sudden she starts not wanting to right hand circles in the round pen and really pinning her ears and just telling me to go to hell but will still go if you make her! So unlike her normally nice attitude. She does ok to the left but that started to go bad a few days later, so I call vet out and she does chiro and acupuncture.........didn't really seem to make a difference. So a few days later I ride her again and trot feels fairly normal but man at a lope, roughest ride ever!! Vet says try bute twice a day for a week and keep going, well I've been doing that and easing up on her workouts but it's obvious that there is a pain issue! The first vet said she showed no signs of hock issues on the chiro exam but I'm at a loss.................help! |

| Did this vet even check the hocks? Any soundness evaluation done?
If all she did was chiro and poke her with some needles is be getting a vet that's actually going to do some tests and Xrays and check her reproductive track as well.
I would start with a full check from a quality performance horse vet. |

Location: somewhere in the south | She did watch her travel and lunge but my terrain isn't the most level so maybe it wasn't as evident as it should have been. I'm having the main vet of the practice come out and do a better workup with xrays probably this week, just wanted to hear what the people in the know think it could be!! One person I had look at her just thought it was attitude but I just don't think that's the case........... |

| Im not one to really guess where the issue is, I do agree with you and believe shes in pain as good horses don't just decide to be bad for something to do, there's always a reason.
Once you get a good check on her you will hopefully have a better idea what's going on!!
It could be so many things... hocks, ovarian cysts, teeth, back / ribs are where is start with my vet

| If possible haul in to the vet where they can evaluate her better. I personally would never use a vet who said bute for a week and not want to follow up and find the cause. I know there are some situations where that may be warranted but from your description, she is hurting somewhere. Good luck with her |

I don't use a back cinch. She is shod very well, my farrier is very talented and knowledgeable. The chiro vet did some adjustments to her in several places and did acupuncture from front to back and in the feet and hocks! I just wish I could figure it out! I need for her to feel better, she needs riding and I need to to ride...............feeling deprived! |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | I would try this. Green alcohol, apple cider vinegar, witch hazel, abzorbine linament half cup,16 oz. on the others. mix in 5 gallon bucket of warm water. do a full body wash. turn loose immediately when done as it will make them tingle and they will want to jump. this is like a full body massage. after this you should be be able to pin point a location. If your horse will accept a back cinch, I would use it. to much pressure on the withers with out it |

Location: North Dakota | cheryl makofka - 2018-07-04 8:05 PM Ulcers can cause horses to not pick up a certain lead. THIS!!! ^^^^^ I had a horse absolutely refuse to turn to the right, didn't even want to pick up a lope to that direction. I put him on omeprazole and a few days later he was fine. I still did a full treatment, but he showed remarkable improvment in just a few.
As for the rough riding, the only time that ever happens in my experience is when they are sore hocked. One day they'll be totally fine and the next rough. You should get rads to see if there is anything going on, but remember that rads don't show inflammation. And flexion tests can be taken with a grain of salt in my opinon too. My horse will barely flex off and I KNOW he needs an injection.
Have you injected this mare before?? Did the prior owners have to do any maintenance?
