Where do you like your 2 year olds to be and 3 year olds? When do you start them on the pattern and when do you start hauling? Also curious those of you who prefer to wait till they are 4-5 before starting them.

I let my horses set their own schedule. Some are almost self-training, and if their physical maturity is earlier I will bring them along earlier. If the foal/young horse has some issues at any point I let them slow down and take a longer road. I don't necessarily have to have them fancy broke before they are on the pattern, but I do want a solid base to work from.
Some of my 2yo's have been physically ready for saddle and rider, some of my 2yo's have been wimpy shrimps and at least a year from being big enough. Almost all my 2yo's will be mentally ready. I've had one or two who were 3yo's before getting to riding maturity in body and mind.
I bought a 4yo filly this year who I've shown twice since February and will take to another two shows this year. I wanted her to slow down and become a little more horsie. Not that she's hot at all, just wanted her to relax compared to the futurity road she'd been prepped and started on. I think her longevity will double this way. I think 5yo for most horses is a fine age to start really pouring on the speed. But that's jmo.

I just got a 3 year old and she is just being sent to be broke out in August. I am not sure what my plan next year will be with her. It will depend on how she is after her first 30 days and how the winter goes.
