What does every one think about High Brow Cat and Doc O'lena bred horses for barrel racing? Both go back to Doc Bar ?
I think it really depends on the individual.
I had a HBC grand daughter out of a Smart Little Lena/Doc's Hickory mare and she was athletic in short spurts, but NEVER would have made a barrel horse.
I also have a Streaking Ta Fame daughter out of the same mare, and she has a lot of run but just isn't very big. She'll suit a smaller rider perfectly.
Then I've got a Smart Steady Date out of a Lena's Telesis mare who is much bigger, athletic, quick, and a natural on the barrels.
All 3 go back to Doc Bar in some way and all 3 could not be more different.
If the horse's pedigree fits what you like, and even more so if the individual looks like something that has potential, then there's no reason they couldn't be a barrel horse. |

| I love my cow breds. We specialize in making youth friendly all around horses - so we want one that can go from the barrels and poles to the roping pen.
My good horse, the one for sale in my signature, is bred similar to the lines you’re looking at through Doc Bar, Doc Olena, and Leo San lines. We’d take 10 of him, although preferably a little taller. He had a great handle on him when he came to us and he’s just been a pleasure to train. He’s smart, so you’d better show him the right way the first time because he’s going to remember whatever you show him. We’ve found that to be the case in a lot of the cow breds - show them what you want and they’ll go to work.
He clocks about the same in big pens vs small pens and he’s a catty little dude. He’s absolutely inhaling the pole pattern.
I will say his size does make it tough to make up time after a trip or the rare occasion we get by the 1st barrel for example. |

| I believe cowbred horses are natural athletes so I don't think there is a job they cannot do. I rode all cowbred horses when I was younger, many 1D horses. A lot of my friends run them too.
I haven't ridden many HBC but know quite a few nice horses with Doc O'lena on their papers. |

| I personally love to see Doc O Lena on a set of papers if I am looking at a cowbred prospect.

| I just bought my first one about 6 weeks ago sight unseen, got my first ride on her a month ago and instantly fell in love. If she is what a typical "cow bred" horse is I am making the switch! Everything she does is just easy and a ton of fun! She is on the smaller side 14.1/2 but moves like a big horse so once I am on her I really don't notice the size. I would grab another or 10 of them :)
No HBC but she does have a little doc o'lena in there

I am considering purchasing one. Shes been roped off, and is ready to start hauling. She is very ratey and can flat turn. Very snappy. I usually dont go for her type but shes really correct confirmationally. Nice low set hocks. She is a grandaughter of HBC on top. The mare is by Smart Mate (Smart Little Lena) and Freckles Playboy. |

My EJ gelding is scared to death of cows!! The only time he's ever tried to spin out from under me was when he was trying to get away from a cow. Well, calf----maybe 75 pounds. . . . Faci is 16.3, about 1250 pounds---I guess he felt over matched!!! |

Bill Riddle One run from a cow to other side of the pen and shook a little. She was Miss Doo Doc. Made the finals at Pacific Coast in LA. Several others were not as bad. Iv had them the opposite. Hated a cow and would take hold of a cow. |

Our barrel mare has only ever done speed events, but she hates cows with a passion and will pin her ears and go after one in a second. Her previous owners said when she was pastured with cows she would work them relentlessly if they got too close. She has old cutting blood; I've often wondered if she could have had a career with cows!

| Can't go wrong in my opinion. Most are so smart and athletic, they pick up the pattern in no time flat. Plus are super enjoyable along the way. If you find one with the speed, jackpot! You'll have an awesome 1D horse. Even if they don't have that wide open run, they are quick enough and ratey enough to make a super nice amateur rodeo horse or 2D jackpot horse... which are still worth a good amount of money. |
