What is the best way to handle a vet check on an horse that is over 3 hours away.  Owner is meeting me half way so i can try the horse and if I like him will get him vet checked.  Owner is okay with the vet check.  I want my vet to check him so how is the best way to handle it.  Do I pay the agreed price with a signed contract that if the horse doesn't pass the sale is null and void?  Seller has been an award winning breeder for twenty plus years.  Nothing negative on the internet on this seller.   Any suggetions??

If you absolutely have to use your Vet I would give the seller some money for fuel and have the horse brought all the way, try him and PPE that same day. If horse didn’t pass PPE I would pay for seller’s fuel home.
I don’t allow my horse to be out of my possession until he’s passed a PPE and paid for. I won’t ask anyone to do any differently for me.
I don’t have a problem finding a vet in the seller’a Area to use. I will usually send the X-rays to my Vet to look at before I commit to purchasing with another vet’ PPE.

I have now allowed 2 horses I've sold to go for PPE with cashier's check in hand. With the cashier's check, I let the horse go with the buyers for 2 days which allowed them to make sure the personality fit their needs and take for vet check. Obviously made them sign something stating check would be in my bank if the horse was not returned in 2 days or the horse had been injured in any way with buyer. I also bought my current mare this same way. I think it really depends on the buyer/seller. I definitely asked upfront before going to look at the horse if this was an option. I paid full asking price as I'm not going to haggle over the phone before seeing the horse. If the horse is not as described, not going to be buying it anyways.

Personally I would not pay for the horse in full until the vet check is complete. If that means you have to pay additional fees to have the seller come to your vet then do it. If it's a LONG drive ask your vet for a recommendation of a closer vet and then have them discuss together. Ask that the entire Pre-Purchase be filmed and sent to your vet for review.

A friend of mine tired a horse and asked for a PPE. The horse was several hours from her so they tried it and then asked for a local vet to perform the exam. The seller indicated that the local vet was not very competent when it came to horse lameness but was the only one around who could do the PPE. They agreed to have a general PPE and if anything glaring came up the sale would not proceed. If the local vet cleared the horse they would pay for it and have another PPE performed a couple days later by their vet with the understanding (in writing) that if anything came up the horse could be returned.

Well horse passed first check and the deal was struck. The took the horse home on the weekend and had the PPE done on the Monday. The Vet on Monday found several issues and recommended that this buy would not suit their needs. They contacted the seller who said well he passed the first one so too bad. Cheque was cashed and they were stuck with the horse.

The seller completely backed out on their contract and unless they hired lawyers and went to court to seriously fight it they were out of luck. The horse needed so much work medically that they couldn't run this horse until the following year. Lesson learned the hard way.

Where is the horse located, and where will you be trying him (halfway point). Probably will be able to get recommendations for a reputable veterinarian in those areas to use for PPE (if they will not agree to hauling him to your own veterinarian). I would recommend NOT paying entire price of horse until he/she passes your PPE.

I went 3+ to seller to try the horse, came home, thought about it, then set the PPE up at TEH- Dr. Honnas.  This was 3+ hours away from seller.  Seller hauled the horse to vet, keeping possession of the horse, with the understanding that I'd pay fuel one way.  I was fine with that.  I bought the horse that day and seller considered the purchase price as total owed.

On an earlier one, I foolishly used a vet near the seller...  no...  not again...  My money paying for the horse needs my vet to do the PPE.

3 hours isn’t terribly far in the world of buying and selling horses.

I would start with your vet - see if they know a vet closer that they trust and would work with sending rads etc.

If they don’t I would talk to the seller and see if you came to them to try the horse would they haul the horse to your vet if you liked him, offer to pay a little fuel money, but that way you both have some travel skin in the game and she doesn’t have to put the horse on a trailer at all until she knows you’re a serious buyer.

I recently bought a horse states away. The PPE was done there and that vet contact my vet. the problem was the technology was so different my vet could not read the x rays. I bought the horse. The vet bill was more than I expected plus the xrays could not be read here. Get the horse here and yes her legs are fine but she has a respiratory issue. In the barrel racing world she was not an expensive horse. Ive read that due to different climates the respiratory would be different. If in fact that vet listened to her lungs. It has been an experience. I could be so angry but I look at it she was sent by GOD to my care. I have learned that part of the PPE is not only legs but lungs. It is a lesson learned for me. She is a beautiful little 14 hand mare for my grans daughter. Big Hip and baby doll head. I pray it will all work out. Good Luck.
