Location: Minnesota | We had rads pulled- diagnosis was navicular. Injected coffin joint along with trying Osphos 2x with no success. So on 2/14 we had the surgery done. My question is for Nerved horses what maintenance/care did you continue? Do you do anything additional or above and beyond? He is still on still rest and will get reset one I am able to pull stitches. I am aware of the special shoes and trimmings already. Just never dealt with navicular myself.

| When I was in high school we bought a young gelding rope horse. He had a full nerve. He was awesome. We did square his toe off a bit, but he never had a lame step or problem. https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/slick+willey+reb |

| Really have to be careful and clean / check feet few times a day. They can have abcesses and injuries and not feel it. |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | I have one and ran him for the last 8 years. Won rodeos, Barrel Bashes, and the State NBHA finals, etc. No one loved to run barrels like that horse. Heel nerved only, so he could feel well over half his foot. After surgery we had him in wedged, aluminum egg bars for one set, then went to Natural Balance, squared and set back. He had a funky shaped foot and doesn't grow heel very well, so I was very timely on keeping his feet done. The last couple of years I injected his coffin joints. Never had any abscess problems, and he overreached and pulled shoes all the time because his backfoot stepped way beyond his front foot. |

Location: Weatherford, TX | Now...I am going to be opposite on the the full nerving. We had a really super nice gelding; and granted he had other issues, but we fully nerved him. It allowed him to move more and caused more issues. With the more movement, the foot/coffin bone was collapsing. It was the only time we nerved. I don’t think I would do it again based on that experience. However, I did know of it being done with good results. |

This is the worst case scenario with neurectomies. Many times nothing catastrophic happens, but that's always a possibility. You take away the inhibition, they use the leg more, things can fall apart. I've seen it happen 3 times since I graduated. Different legs, different issues.. |

Yes, ^^^ this...is what our vet told us. It is rare, but it happened. Our vet had no idea it would. I didn’t even ride him, he was a pasture ornament. Our vet was a great lameness/state track vet. It was horrible to go through for us and the vet. It has been over 10 years and I still tear up talking about that horse. We do know we did all we could keeping him as happy as we could for 6 years longer. He was nerved the last 2 years. The bills were so much. He had issues as a 5YO and we kept him until 12. |

| I had one 1/2 nerved, he could still feel his toes, he did great and is still in the pasture, he has feeling back but is a pasture ornament so I haven’t done it, he’s 22 and runs from time to time and walks all over sound, but if u watch him at a trot you see it. In my experience I would do it again but I hate it for the horse above, that sucks. |
