Location: California | BFA sales looked low, what is everyone’s interpretation of the current horse market? Interested in thoughts and opinions.

| Well, a 2yo cutter just sold for a record $500k at the NCHA Futurity sale with more horses bringing over $100k than last year.
I did see a full sister to Streakin Queenie sold for $70,000... Was it that this crop (as a whole) at the BFA was not as well bred as past years?

It did look like a weaker group on paper in my opinion. |

I was obviously talking about the barrel horse sales and market. |

Location: Idaho | I thought horses sold for what I'd buy them for... I watched it on facebook live and I was predicting what it would bring and I was pretty dang close each time, except for the high seller, i thought she'd bring around $45k... so I was a little off with her going for $70k |

Personally I just feel like the market is oversupplied to many horses per buyers. Maybe ET is not just a good thing for the market cause there sure are lots and lots of horses for sale. But what do I know? |

| The barrel industry is bad about thinking if a mare has a uterus, that means it’s ok to breed. I’ve never seen a race horse owner go on a forum and say, “my mare raced but always ran at the back of the pack, but I want to breed her (even though she’s got nothing in her pedigree) and I’ll never sell the foal”. |

Race horses don’t have a d format though. We pay people to have a slow horse. |

then don't whine about cheap sale prices.

Then people shouldn’t complain when a market tanks and prices are cheap or there are too many mediocre horses flooding the market. |

I agree, but this is as much on the stallion owners as it is the mare owners. It's not just a rich mans sport yet, and that is a good thing. |

My two cents on this --
No matter the bloodlines not all horses are going to clock 1D, or even 2D.
A good, reliable, ready - steady, check winning, sound and sane 3D horse should be worth something too. Not the prices that the show winning horses carry of course, but you can win a lot of $$'s if your horse wins money in the 3D 90% of their entries over a 10+ year career. And the papers on such a horse will range the gambit of QH bloodlines.
One other thought - when the 1D and 2D have 100 finishers each (say at a 400-500 entry show), how will breeding and the market respond? We have certainly succeeded at breeding the better barrel horse and this scenario probably isn't more than a few years down the road. Will we develop a .25 split? Will 90 top money 1D and 2D horses go home from most shows with nothing to show? How could you justify spending 50K+ on a horse that might or might not ever hit money? Just a little food for thought when contemplating the future of barrel racing.
