Q & A WITH LISA THORNTON...
RRN: How long have you been riding horses?
LISA: Since I was about three years old.
RRN: When did you start barrel racing?
LISA: I started barrel racing around the age of four.
RRN: What do you do for a living?
LISA: I train barrel and pole horses but also have a side job as a production analyst for oil wells.
RRN: Tell us about your main mount?
LISA: My main mount is a 9yr old gelding named Straight Toasted aka Hunter. I purchased him as a two year old off the track.
RRN: Tell us a little bit about your horse’s personality?
LISA: Hunter has a mischievous personality. He is like the kid that is always picking at other kids and then ends up getting his butt kicked.
RRN: What's it like to ride Hunter?
LISA: He is fun most of the time because he thinks everything is a game. But, sometimes, he is a pain because he thinks everything is a game.
RRN: Is he push style or more of a free runner?
LISA:He is definitely a push style horse. I feel like a crazy screaming banshee when I run him.
RRN: Shoes or barefoot?
LISA: Hunter has always been shod.
RRN: What is Hunter's favorite thing?
LISA: His favorite thing is when we get home, he rolls right away and then jumps straight up in the air bucking and kicking and running.
RRN: What does Hunter like to avoid doing?
LISA: Work, lol. He is very lazy.
RRN: Is he stalled or turned out?
LISA: He has a small trap with a shed.
RRN: Do you ride him daily?
LISA: Mostly every day.
RRN: Do you still do barrel work on him during the week?
LISA: About once a week I will do an imaginary run at a trot and do everything I want to do during a real run.
RRN: What’s your favorite saddle to ride in?
LISA: I love my Coats. I feel like I can trick ride in it, and sometimes Hunter makes me trick ride to keep barrels up.
RRN: What’s your favorite bit?
LISA: I really don’t have a favorite because every horse is different, but I do start most all of my horses off in a Rosie gag with a chain mouthpiece and a string curb.
RRN: Tell us about one of your most memorable moments with a horse/horses.
LISA: One that comes to mind is running the fastest time at Old Fort Days Futurity/Derby in 1999. I was riding a little paint mare that was lucky if she was 14.2. She was by a western pleasure paint stallion and a running bred quarter horse mare. Her name was Piglet because her only concern in life was where her next meal was coming from. She was also a 20 second pole horse. I bought her off an ad in the San Antonio Express News for $1200. Ended up selling her to a 15yr old Brittany Pozzi.
RRN: Tell us about one of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in order to do what you’re doing with horses.
LISA: One of the biggest challenges of course, is not having a big bank account. Another is finding good help. Sometimes when you get into the day to day monotony of every day riding you can find yourself doubting your abilities.
RRN: What is the next goal on your list regarding your riding?
LISA: I would like to go all the way at the American.
RRN: How long do you see yourself doing this?
LISA: As long as I can get on a horse I think I will be riding.
RRN: If you could ride any horse out there today, which one do you think you would choose?
LISA: I would love to ride Hailey Kinsel’s mare Sister.
